One of the first things we talk about at the beginning of a writing course is this: What does it mean to “read like a writer?” One of the skills that helps students learn to write — or learn to write better — is to alter their reading habits so that instead of reading as readers, they begin to read as writers. Most people can`t be a better writer because they are not engaged with the writing material. The reason why they can't relate to the subject matter is because the professors usually give their students something they are not interested in and then make them write about it. When a student is not interested in something the students don't tend focus as much as they would if it was something they would like. My Path to Literacy For a very long time writing and reading was a huge struggle for me. I was one of those students who was very intelligent, but disliked reading tremendously and was often told, “You write the way you talk”.
