How To Be Successful In College

Every student has barriers and challenges that they must overcome to succeed in college. As a first time college student, it's important for me to recognize and identify the barriers early in my college career to ensure my success! My main two barriers is time management and lack of money. These are significant barriers because not knowing how to manage time will cause me to be behind in most of my college courses. Without money, I won't have the capacity to pay for college expenses that should be paid out of pocket. To overcome these challenges, there are a few strategies that I can use to help me and it will be discussed in more details.

Strategies to take control of my time would consist of having a schedule, making a to do list every day, not being afraid to say “no,” and creating a dedicated study time. Writing down what my plans are, ahead of time, for the rest of the week will help get my priorities done. To do lists will also come in handy, because we all tend to forget things at times and with a list I can cross out the things that I have completed throughout the day. Not being afraid to say no is the main key for college success. For instance, let’s say that a friend invites me to the movies, but the next day I have a math test, obviously the answer will be no. It is necessary to make time to study that night before so I can score an A in the math test! Creating devoted time to study is important. Everyone in college, including myself, has to study at least 6-9 hours weekly for each course. During this time, shutting off my phone will be the best call. Strategies to overcome financial burdens consist of having a job, loans, applying for grants and scholarships. To pay for tuition costs and other costs like books, supplies, and transportation I can get a loan, but it must be repaid with interest so I will prefer applying for scholarships and grants. Both, are a form of gift aid that does not have to be repaid back and who doesn't like free money? Having a job while being in college can also benefit me because I will have money to pay off for my education in case that I don't receive financial
