April 28, 2017 Think back to being in high school. Do you remember being ready for college? Do you remember how diverse your school was or was not? Did you feel like your school was overcrowded? Well, I am a four year student at Denver South High School. Here at south we have many ups and downs but, we are now trying to outweigh the downs with ups. South is extremely diverse one of the most diverse in the state of Colorado. Anya Kamenetz the author of the article “Most High School Seniors aren't college or Career Ready, Say ‘Nations Report Card’”, expresses many details on why the average high school student isn't ready for college stating, “40 percent of students score at college and career ready levels on NAEP (The National Assessment of Educational Progress)... Nationwide high school graduation rate was 82 percent, not 40 percent.” (Kamenetz) How is it that 40 percent of seniors are ready for college but 80 percent of students walk at graduation? Being college ready is way more important than receiving your high school diploma because collge sets you up for a job of career for the rest of your life. Some might say South does not support their students. However South's staff believes in every student and believes they can do whatever their dreams may be. Others will say South isn't divise ib AP and Honors classes. However, Rising Rebel is working on increasing the numbers for next year and many more years to come. South has great diversity and a great support system but, they need to improve on lack of funding, college career readiness, and reducing classroom sizes.
