Which team are you on? Do you take part in the “M-I-Z!” “Z-O-U!” chant? Or do you shout with pride “Rock Chalk!” “Jayhawk!”?…
To get an understanding of the significance of interscholastic competition at the collegiate level, simply turn on the television on a Saturday morning during college football. The sponsors, fans, pageantry, etc., is astronomical and continues to grow exponentially. Undoubtedly, college athletics is “big business” and is often viewed as a separate entity. Duke professor of public policy, economics and law, Charles T. Clotfelter, offers an interesting viewpoint on college athletics, stating faculty members’ blindness to the significance of big-time sports amounts to operating in a parallel universe, which is impossible, because the evidence is all around us and so commonplace (Etizen, 2012). Its difficulty to disagree with Clotfelter because sports are deeply rooted in our society.…
Through the college search I knew I wanted a rigorous institution that was going to push me to grow as a student and as a person and give me an opportunity to play division 3 football. Jeremy Stephan, a Freshman majoring in Chemistry and on your football team, and I played football together in high school and he knew I also wanted to continue playing football in college and he recommended Macalester. Simultaneously, I was attending multiple football camps where the Macalester coaching staff was recruiting at. I began to build a bond with Coach Davies and he thought I would be a great fit at Macalester. Both Jeremy Stephan and Coach Davies helped me learn about Macalester and why it would be the right fit, but through my multiple visits I have…
Athletics have been a part of colleges for over a century, but are they really worth all the time and money that they are given? It is a common myth that college athletic programs bring in tons of money for their school, but in reality, most athletic programs do not make enough money to support themselves. The main purpose of attending any school is to receive an education and become prepared for the real world. That is something often forgotten by student-athletes and schools themselves. Contrary to popular belief, eliminating athletics from college will have more benefits than keeping them.…
College isn’t cheap. College students have financial obligations outside of the classroom; being on scholarship does not lighten the financial burden. Student athletes not only have to juggle school and family but also have to deal with the pressures of producing in athletics. College students have luxury of being able to work a part time job along with school, studies, practices, and games.…
Actually, I am still in the most challenging academic course I have taken to date, AP United States History (APUSH). APUSH has been difficult for me due to the fact that I had very little knowledge of US history preceding my enrollment in the class. Furthermore, prior to this class I had never really had to study extensively to maintain high marks. APUSH has been different. Having little knowledge of this material, I have had to spend much more time studying.…
I am interested in joining the Athletic Training program because I think that it will be an amazing learning opportunity. Last year I had the privilege of joining the Castleberry Tennis team which provided me with an insight into some of the strenuous and demanding requirements that athletes must meet daily. Through this experience I was able to come to the realization that my passion and skill concerning sports leans more towards the technical side of things rather than the hands-on experience. I believe that by becoming a student aide for the Athletic Training program, I will be able to support the athletic program in a way in which I feel I am more apt to do…
Attending Buena Vista University it seems as if everyone plays a sport, the small campus and even smaller student body creates an environment that puts an emphasis on athletics. In my three years attending Buena Vista, I have had two different roommates, both athletes themselves. Living with athletes creates challenges and opportunities that are special to athletes. For a washed up high school athlete getting the chance to live vicariously through some of my best friends at the collegiate level is an experience like non-other. One of the biggest concerns when first heading off to college is will you be able to make friends.…
I believe my college experience will be fun but at the same time serious. I am planning on doing sports in college. I’m hoping to do soccer, and track and field. I am planning on doing a lot of health, biology, Genetics, or maybe even science classes. These classes will support my career because you need to know a lot about the body and I’m interested in doing that.…
Independent Study is a huge privilege to be able to partake on. I believe that I deserve to go on the my trip because I am responsible and driven. Another reason that I want to go on this trip is because I do not find interest in the other options that are offered. For AE week I am going to travel to Oregon with my mom to check out colleges to possibly attend after I graduate High School. The colleges that we will be going to see are University of Oregon, Oregon State University, Linfield College, and Pacific University.…
In life we have many choices, and the choices we make affect our everyday life. The decision to attend college is a big one in a person’s life. In today’s economy a high school diploma will not get a person a respected career. Many jobs require a minimum of an Associate’s Degree. So when a person is deciding on a college, many factors are involved: whether you are going to stay local, move away to attend college in another state, or which college offers the best program for your career choice.…
Attending college is one of many goals I have set and commencing these goals has taken a great amount of self-discipline. This endeavor has not been an easy journey thus far. My family has faced financial hardship this past year and this has added to the burden of planning for college and highlighting my baseball skills for college coaches. However, this setback has not deterred me from achieving a solid academic record and realizing success on the baseball field. I have chosen to study economics as my primary academic focus, and I feel Creighton’s Heider College of Business will provide a solid educational foundation for my future.…
I visited Elizabethtown on a whim, mostly because my grandmother had mentioned it to me a few times. I hadn't heard much about the school before touring it. I knew it was a small, liberal arts college, which is my main criteria for all of the schools that I tour. Elizabethtown blew me away in a million different ways. I have toured a lot of small colleges, but few of them have the obvious community feel that Elizabethtown has.…
Searching for a college can be a challenging thing for a high school student. Most don’t even know what they want to go to school for. I was in the same boat as them until I was talking to my grandfather one day and he suggested that I look into the United States Naval Academy. At this point, I had never heard of the Academy. I performed extensive research on the academy and decided it was a path that I would like to pursue, despite the challenge it posed.…
However, while attending these universities, students are given multiple opportunities to go to college fairs,…
