Does this sentence make sense: “ Are you ok, what happens?” I don’t think so. Well many schools have had to cut the past tense out of English Programs due to the lack of funding. While this may seem crazy, schools have saved over $3 million. The Onion found this news very amusing and used this bizarre event to write an article that uses ridicule, folly, and low comedy.
The way this article uses ridicule is when Utah Sen says “ The past tense is, by definition is outdated. I can’t remember the last time I had to use it.” He is being very dismissive of the fact that it might be a lot harder for students to communicate what has already happened. Let's think about this, when you're teaching history it’s very difficult to …show more content…
My example here is in the article it says “ Despite the concern that cutting the past tense will prevent graduates from communicating effectively in the workplace, the home, the grocery store, church, and various other public spaces…” There was clearly no common sense used in making this decision. If you know that this is going to affect your graduates drastically in life then why are you cutting using the past tense. Along with not being able to communicate effectively in public places, this also affects them when applying for colleges. Let’s think about it. Let’s pretend that you're writing your essay to apply for college, and one of the questions is “ What have you done for community service in the past?” In your head I want you to try and answer that without using the past tense. It’s not impossible but when you write your paper that college is going to think you're not capable of using proper grammar. However not only have they cut the past tense they also reduced foreign language programs to only learning basic sentences and cutting addition and subtraction. As if cutting the past tense wasn’t already a drastic change, now your going to cut foreign language and basic math.
The last term used is low comedy. This is used throughout the whole article from beginning to end. It describes the situation using a series of events that lead to the past tense.
In conclusion I think we can all agree that instead of things that kids can use through life, you should cut other things like certain sport programs or school clubs. However cutting the past tense just isn’t the way to go. I believe that The Onion conveyed their point very effectively and clearly, while using small amounts of
