How To Achieve Diversity In Policing

There has always been a need for policing and in the beginning it started out with normal citizens policing their own (Grant, H. and Terry, K. (2017). Back then, policing was not as organized, sometimes politically based and definitely not as diverse as it should have been. But policing starts with appropriate recruitment of men, women and people from all walks of life that are qualified and capable of the job. The world itself is very diverse and that diversity should reflect in policing, which starts with recruitment. Police recruitment all over the nation is not easy but for some areas it can be very hard to have a diverse force. This is not always due to lack of candidates but having the resources to implement a good recruitment strategy. Being a police officer is a high risk and high stress job and finding recruits to become officers can be challenging. The hiring process can be difficult and is not taken lightly. People who want to become a law enforcement officer must meet basic requirements, take physical and mental examinations, pass background checks and have a face to face meeting for interviews.

Stress can come from being stagnant in their job, being looked over for a promotion, failing health or losing a fellow police officer. Stressful situations implemented in police training can help tremendously allow officers to learn from their mistakes and continue to improve themselves. But learning to cope with stressful situations in a training environment can help reduce bad attitudes and it allows the officers to deal with issues that, if faced with in the future, it will allow them to recognize the warnings or reflags that come with stress (Penzenstadler, N. and Alcindor, Y.
