Within the last year or two police officers everywhere have been in the headlines for misconduct, whether that misconduct has been with citizens or within their own departments. When officers commit acts of misconduct there must be disciplinary actions taken. Chief of Police handles disciplinary actions. Disciplinary actions can range from verbal warnings to termination depending on the severity of the offense. The focal point of this assignment will be exploring time fraud within the police department. The research will expound on exactly what time fraud is, how time fraud can effect the police department. An Internal Affairs investigation revealed that since 2008, Mosby Colbert has been routinely turning in overtime sheets to the District Commander that reflected several hours more than her allotted 40 per week. After the hours were approved, she would alter the time sheet to reflect a larger number before forwarding it to the payroll department.”(AlHajal, 2012). This incident is just one of many cases of police officers being investigated and indicted for time fraud. In order to explore the causes, effects, and solutions to time fraud it first must be established what is time fraud. Time fraud also refer to as time theft is, “when an employee accepts pay from their employer for work that they have not actually done, or for time they have not actually put into their work. Time theft is not always easy to detect and can come in many forms and many levels of severity.”(What is the Definition, 2010). There are several types of time fraud, time card/ time clock fraud, over-extended breaks, excessive personal time, and Internet time fraud. When investigating recent activity within the police department the most common forms of time fraud were time clock fraud and excessive personal time
