While holding those faculty positions, I was able to learn a multifarious array of teaching methods to increase the academic engagement of remedial students taking mathematics. My experiences have shown me that when students teach other students, they retain more knowledge and have higher rates of success. I have also learned that a successful teacher connects to the lives and experiences of students. It will enable me to undertake studies at Howard University while contributing to the university through teaching and scholarship. It will be a great honor for me to receive this award to matriculate through this program. During the application process, I have had an opportunity to learn about the Howard faculty members and my research interests closely align with the research interests of the faculty members. I would like to study and work with Dr. Kyndra Middleton because she has expertise in psychometrics and measurement bias. I would also like to study with Dr. Constance Ellison, who has expertise in socio-psychological relationships as they relate to forms of instruction. I would welcome an opportunity to work with Dr. Hakim Rashid. His work on examining concepts of self and self-esteem is of particular interest to me, especially as it relates to academic performance. Frederick Douglass said that “it is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men”. I would like to enroll in Howard University’s Educational Psychology doctoral program so that I can continue to enrich the lives of the next generation of scholars.
