During mental health clinical on February 1, 2016 I observed two therapy sessions lead by Debby Richmond at Bridgehaven. As I waited for Debby to give me a tour I was approached by several people using the services in the facility. I was looking at the art work and was greeted by one individual lady who actually helped give the tour. After the tour I was educated about the facility and what they do and later attended the therapy sessions. The focus of the first therapy session was women’s issues. This group consisted of all women ranging from younger aged women in their twenties to older women in their sixties. Many of these women had suffered years of abuse, some abuse afflicted were from early childhood and other abuse incurred in adulthood …show more content…
The women who joined the group were all from the first group I attended except one. The one women who was new to the group had the spotlight because she was having major problems with custody battle with her eleven-month old daughter. This group’s focus was on self-determination. All the individuals had a sense of what self-determination was and there were steps to achieving this. Five steps were discussed for achieving success in self-determination. The first step was to decide what you are going to do and is it the right thing you, your goal(s) in other words. The second step is developing a plan to meet your goals. Following the second step is determining what help you may need to achieve what you have decided to do or your meet your goal. Then you must determine what help you need for each part of your plan for achieving success. The next step is record your progress by finding a way to maintain documentation of your progress. Finally the fifth step is to disseminate by sharing what you did and what you learned throughout this process. All the members of this group were concerned for one another by reinforcing positive comments and ideas to help the others. Even though this group was focused on the self-determination aspect individual goals were shared and discussed in order to get clarity on ways in achieving these individual goals. Much focus was on the individual young lady in the custody battle because she had court the next morning and her anxiety was high. By the end of the session there were many great ideas that had floated around the table and seemed as if some individuals were going to take advantage of the information provided. Bridgehaven is a great asset in the community helping those in need through group therapy, individual counseling and the ability to socialize with a peer group that share many of the same problems finding solutions

In Jessica Pishko’s essay, “Serving Life for Surviving Abuse,” she writes about the unfortunate event that happened to Kelly Savage. Pishko focuses on why Kelly got the outcome that she did and what it means for other women. Even though this essay is written in just five short pages, it really serves as an example to show what happens to those who were victims of abuse and how the court systems handle it. Pishko thoroughly explains Kelly’s story, includes eye opening facts about women in prison, and has changed many people’s perspectives towards domestic violence. Hopefully, those who were psychically, emotionally, and sexually abused in the past will be able to seek help whether they ended up in prison or not.…

Amongst the eleven women that Megan Sweeney interviewed in The Story Within Us, most suffered some kind of abuse before entering the carceral state. From emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, these women have lived through it all. One interesting narrative that was found amongst the stories was the intimate relationship between the abuser and the abused. They were family members (parents, uncle, brother, cousins), stepparents, mothers’ boyfriends, friends of the family, or teachers. The majority of them lived in the same house with their abusers, which allowed their home to be an unsafe environment.…

Interpersonal violence against women is endemic in our society. Thus, it is estimated that 14% to 20% of women will experience rape at some point in their lives; that 25% to 28% will be physically abused in a sexual-romantic relationship; and that 8% to 24% will be stalked by someone they know or by a stranger. When these statistics are added to the 25% to 35% likelihood that the average adult woman has been sexually abused as a child, it is clear that the epidemiology of interpersonal violence against women is a pressing social issue (Briere & Jordan, 2004). Equally concerning is the association between these various forms of victimization and mental health issues in women. Female survivors of sexual trauma are vulnerable to a wide range of…

It shows how sexual abuse against a female can link to domestic terrorism. The book brings about some interesting parallels between a public trauma (terrorism) and a private trauma (rape). It also discusses the way that these public traumas can leave scars, which is akin to the lasting scars and loss of self respect which can occur within a female who has suffered sexual abuse. This source gains credibility from the author, Dr. Judith Herman. Dr. Herman is a professor at Harvard University and also the director of training for victim violence at the Cambridge Hospital.…

There is a double standard when it comes to female and male sex workers in this risky industry. Much like society, female workers are expected to be submissive and catering to men’s needs. Therefore, any man who chooses this as his trade of choice is compared to a woman and seen as feminine and thus weak. (Stoddard, 2014). Most male prostitutes that do partake in the trade, regardless of their willingness and consent to work, have been stereotyped as weak victims of overpowering, more dominant men.…
