The Characteristics Of Surface Learning As A Surface-Learning Approach

Decent Essays
The surface learning approach is used when a student just wants to rush through assignments and pass a class. Most of the time when surface learning is used the student is lacking background knowledge to help understand the material; however, the deep learning approach is used when a student is forming connections and making more time for coursework. At a young age I was a surface learner only doing the minimum work required. What made me decide to become a deep learner and expand my logic?
In order to approach learning deeply, I must be intrigued with what I am doing. I give an aspiration to my assignments, work, and life. It’s not all about getting a passing grade, but more about being so engaged that I embrace the material and take

I started to interpret myself and believe in my competence. I changed my childish thinking and developed as a person. In the past, I would look at a hard task assigned and think there’s no way I’m doing that. I didn’t have the confidence in myself to feel determined enough to advance. Now, I have a positive attitude towards any challenge that comes my way! My deep learning approach involves pushing myself and my abilities the furthest I possibly can. A desire is within me to learn more and ask more questions. I am motivated to learn as much as I can for myself and my children. To me, it’s not just about passing a class, but it’s about finishing my classes knowing what I learned and can take with me. I apply what I have learned in each class to all of my classes. I’m constantly trying to find the answers using critical thinking, researching, writing down notes, and reading the notes over and over again to embed them in my …show more content…
Once my confidence built-in myself, I started to open up to people. For example, in my last English class I would always raise my hand when the teacher asked a question. I would also read my essays out loud to the class; however, if someone asked me a couple of years ago to read out loud I wouldn’t have. Now, I raise my hand willingly. Communication is such an important aspect of life. Every time I step outside of my comfort zone, I impress myself and realize how simple it is to do so. I enjoy volunteering to share my work because every task I’m given extends my learning opportunity. Learning does not have to be dull and draining. It can be intriguing and thought-provoking with the right state of mind. I have a passion and motivation to learn as much as can. Multiple strategies I use in English include editing my work, communicating, reading my assignments, demonstrating critical thinking, and trying to expand my vocabulary by thinking deeper about what words work the best. I like to go in-depth and be as thorough as possible. I’m an ambitious woman and will never give up no matter what I’m challenged

In a guided self-assessment of study habits and strategies, ED 3100 students have been challenged to embark on a journey of self-exploration in an effort to better understand our own learning processes, as well as determine how different methods of studying and learning may affect our overall success. Dr. Demars (2015) explains that exploration and knowledge of our own techniques and learning strategies will then empower us, as future educators, to facilitate the same attributes in our students. She emphasizes that the better we (as teachers) understand our own learning processes, the better we can understand those of our students, and consequently help them self-assess to achieve a better understanding of their own learning. Although this exploration has raised many questions for me, there were key themes that stood out amongst others. By constructing an unbiased system of measurement, I am experimenting with deliberate and strategic changes to my study habits that are explicitly designed to address and correct weaknesses in my current study habits that I will track over a period of four weeks.…
