J. K. Rowling's Pottermore Sorting Hat Analysis

Since the introduction of J.K. Rowling’s Pottermore Sorting Hat Quiz, there has been an influx of talk about which house people are sorted into. It isn’t abnormal for people to sneer down their noses at anyone who says they were sorted into the Slytherin House. It’s a common misconception that those who are sorted into Slytherin have an overall dark nature about them. The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from the Harry Potter series has four school “houses” that students are sorted into; each house has its own history and the students in that house usually have very specific personality traits. The Slytherin house is notoriously hated by outsiders for many reasons such as: the house founder, Salazar Slytherin’s, prejudice against …show more content…
Rowling herself “[Salazar Slytherin] believed that the school should only teach pure-blood witches and wizards” (Rowling). His belief went so far that he ended up creating the Chamber of Secrets with a monster that would kill selected muggle-born students in the school. Unfortunately, Salazar passed his biases onto future students, and it is very common for a Slytherin student to be heard calling a muggle-born student “mudblood”, a derogatory term for someone born from muggle parents. Thus, people outside of the Slytherin community view those students in it as being like-minded with their house founder and believe that all Slytherin students have a hatred for anyone who isn’t a pure-blood wizard. Those outside of the Slytherin house hate Slytherin students because Salazar Slytherin himself had a hatred for muggle-born witches and wizards.Salazar’s prejudice is a main reason for people’s bias against them, but it isn’t the only cause for such a deep hatred for this Hogwart’s …show more content…
This selectiveness of certain personalities was upheld throughout the years thanks to the Hogwart’s sorting hat, who was able to look deep into new students’ minds and see what their personality traits were. Slytherin students often share the traits of being ambitious, shrewd, cunning, and achievement-oriented, meaning that Slytherins are real thinkers who are interested in getting ahead. It seems that the one trait that Slytherin’s are missing, that would help others despise them less, is that they are not too concerned with being chivalrous. In a Pottermore Article titled Why Hogwarts Needs a Slytherin Rowling describes how being cunning and achievement-oriented really helps many Slytherin students get ahead in life and how it’s normal that people who want to get ahead are going to succeed (6). The lack of chivalry in Slytherin students, and their willingness to do the work to get ahead in life makes it certainly seem like Slytherin students are too ambitious for

All these things suggest that absolute prejudice opinions exist. Firstly, the citizens of Phippsburg express their contempt by the cruel things that they say. An excellent example of this would be in the beginning of the novel when the town’s leaders were watching Lizzie Bright, a negro girl living on Malaga Island, scramble down a tree. Deacon Hurd said, “would you look at that monkey go?”(19)…

Through Brook’ Vermeer’s Hat: the Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World, Brook claims that the “dawn of globalization” took place during the 17th century, and was the beginning of the start of the modern world due to the growing alliances, trade and production of goods. Brook backs up his claim by using the several pieces of art included in his book, that were created during the seventeenth century. He focuses on specific parts of each work, and uses it as a door to the past and uses them as an example to explain how the existence of the item in the painting shows that the dawn of globalization happened in the seventeenth century, and it happened because of goods and trade at its core. Instead of “looking at the surface” (6) Brook looks, and inspires readers to look, at the objects that make up the piece of art.…

Prejudice - “an unfair feeling of dislike for a person or group because of race, sex, religion, etc.” In a world filled with a plethora of races in the world, prejudice still seems to be alive and well. Prejudice is something that does not discriminate who it affects and in what situation. The judgements people make based on stereotypes can truly cripple someone or it can even not allow people to resist immersing themselves in culture. The novels The Poisonwood Bible and The Concubine’s Children both show evidence of prejudice but on different sides of the spectrum.…

What would they do if someone expressed a hateful, racist attitude? Would they confront the person, walk away, or let it pass? How can students state their opinions in a way that does not make them look conceited or self-important? Can they really make a difference in society and the attitudes of those around them? Most people, presumably students, ignore or internalize offhand and offensive remarks as it typically ‘does not concern them’.…

Children 's literature can be said to be concerned with both ideology and power relations. This essay is interested in exploring these issues through a close reading of an extract from J.K Rowling 's Harry Potter and the Philosopher 's Stone (1997). The extract itself is taken from chapter ten, Halloween in which a pivotal scene in the plot 's rising action is played out. The scene also highlights a major development in the character of Hermione Granger, from prissy 'nightmare ' (Rowling, 1997) to loyal friend which this essay intends to explore in greater detail. Furthermore, as part of a wider discussion questions such as; how is the relationship between children and adults represented; who is the more powerful of the two; is that power…

In his book Vermeer’s Hat: the seventeenth century and dawn of the global world, historian Timothy Brook explores the roots of world trade in the seventeenth century by analyzing six paintings by the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. The book has its primary focus on ties between Europe and the rest of the world and the growing Chinese impact on the world during the age of innovation and improvisation. Brook argues that globalization, which is believed to have begun in the twentieth and twenty-first century had its roots in the seventeenth century. This is evident in one of the portraits painted by Johannes Vermeer of the landscape view of Delft.…

The way students act outside of the classroom, is the way that they also act in the classroom. It may take time to show it, but the character traits of each student will resemble how they are in a learning environment. Each student is a different person, and they all have different ways of learning, however, if they don’t have good character traits it will start to affect the way of learning. Character traits of high school students will effect them later on in their life. Having good character traits, turn into having good habits, and those habits help the students succeed in school.…
