The New World upon European contact I would describe as a melting pot of disease and disaster for the Native American populations. Moreover, the “Europeans also carried germs previously unknown to the Americas” according to Foner (2014 p.21).
The Native Americans were hit with an overwhelming amount of disease infested traffic. The Native Americans, unaware of these foreign diseases appeared ill-prepared in handling the diseases. The unknown diseases to them resulted in a devastating amount of lives lost within their culture. They were caught off guard by the sudden incoming flow of traffic to their land.
