Personal Narrative: My Experience At The Marriott Library

Assignment #3
I ended up carrying out my experiment in three different location. Initially, the plan was to go to the Marriott Library a bit later at night (9-10 PM), find people sitting by themselves with plenty of empty tables/seats surrounding them, sit right next to them, and stare periodically. I decided not to speak until spoken to first. I figured that this would be a bit off putting to most people since they’d realize that there are plenty of open tables and seats around that I could take.
When I arrived at the library, strangely enough, most of the people who were alone and in open areas were males about my age. I tested this with four males and only one female. Two of the males had similar reactions. As soon as I sat down next to them and looked directly at them, they stopped what they were doing and started talking to me. We carried out short conversations about school and it ended in them asking for my phone number. The other males didn’t seem very enthused by my behavior. One of the males looked up when he realized I was looking at him a couple of times, looked around, and got up to leave. The other male simply ignored me and carried out his studying. The female noticed immediately and looked as if she was going to talk to me and then she went back to typing on her computer. She looked up a

I wanted to try the experiment out on some older people and gauge their reactions. I decided to go to two malls (I needed to buy things from these two malls anyway, so I was not really loitering) and carry out the experiment in the same way I did at the library. It was more difficult finding people at the mall by themselves. At one mall I saw two middle aged women by themselves who were dressed like they just came from work. At the same mall I saw an elderly woman who was pretty dressed up. At the other mall I saw a middle aged man and an elderly

Breaking Social Norms In today’s world we are given a list of social norms we feel compelled to follow as a society. Social norms are the rules of behavior that are considered acceptable in a group or society (YourDictionary). Norms typically change over time due to several different factors and reasons throughout generations. Over the past two days I have spent my time breaking the norm of giving personal space by sitting extremely close to strangers and documenting the people’s reactions while doing so.…

During my internship experience, I learned a lot of things that I thought I knew but are misconstrued on. With that being said, I know everything must be done in decent order or this will cause chaos and lead to confusion. I also learned everything takes patience and is very time- consuming. I became frustrated, so many times and just wanted to give up, but I had to remind myself that hard times are going to come and everything is going to work out. Many times I sat on my bed crying because it seems like everything piled on me at one time.…

For this sociological experiment I broke the norm that led to the ¨personal bubble¨ rule, by getting, “too close¨ to strangers when I talk to them by society's standards. This social norm shows that people are used to having their own space and not having others be within a certain distance. When you talk or interact with another person you both are in control of the personal space given. This leads to me testing others by stepping over boundaries to make them feel uncomfortable, nervous, or embarrassed.…

Last October I participated in the Dartmouth Native Fly-In Program and while I was visiting I made a trip to the third floor of the Dartmouth library. I remember this experience quite well because out of all the wonderful memories I made on that trip, this was the one experience that had the greatest impact on me. I remember walking into the library where old, frail books lined the walls with dark, mahogany bookcases stretching high. There were antique lamps on the desks that let off just enough light for one person to study under and floors that creaked loud enough to draw attention to my friends and I. We finally reached the center of the library where I saw a bronze Native American sculpture that I recognized from a museum I have visited many times here in Oklahoma.…

I invaded people’s space in the fifth floor where my friend Solange was my partner who helped me. The fifth floor is where groups of people go and is a place to study and talk about anything. In this process, I did three different acts throughout the day so people would not recognize me and know I was doing a social experiment. The first act I did was that I sat in a table with three other freshmen Latino males. The table had four chairs and I filled the last one and moved the chair very closely to the male that the chair was vacant.…

People, especially students, live in a fast paced life where everything needs to be done accurately before its due date. As a student, sometimes I feel a lot of pressure because I have too many things to do in a very short time. However, whenever I feel that this pressure is getting me, I go to my favorite place on campus; the place where I can think clearly and prioritize what I am willing to do. Although it can seem like a big, static, tall building from the outside, Parks library is always like a beehive from inside. Personally, I like to sit at the window of the north side of Parks library because it is quiet and it inspires me.…

In Richard Wright’s The Library Card, the author vividly describes his quotidian life as an African-American living in the segregated south of the early- to mid- 20th century. Widely considered an autobiographical account, Wright’s short story touches on key details of his everyday life that separated his from the life of many whites. By holding such a unique perspective of the period’s culture, Wright, as the story’s narrator, is able to liberate himself from the confines put in place by the period’s unjust practices against African-Americans. Carefully describing and recanting life experiences where he was degraded or belittled on the account of his skin tone, Wright paints a vivid picture of the social constructs faced preventing any sort…
