I ended up carrying out my experiment in three different location. Initially, the plan was to go to the Marriott Library a bit later at night (9-10 PM), find people sitting by themselves with plenty of empty tables/seats surrounding them, sit right next to them, and stare periodically. I decided not to speak until spoken to first. I figured that this would be a bit off putting to most people since they’d realize that there are plenty of open tables and seats around that I could take.
When I arrived at the library, strangely enough, most of the people who were alone and in open areas were males about my age. I tested this with four males and only one female. Two of the males had similar reactions. As soon as I sat down next to them and looked directly at them, they stopped what they were doing and started talking to me. We carried out short conversations about school and it ended in them asking for my phone number. The other males didn’t seem very enthused by my behavior. One of the males looked up when he realized I was looking at him a couple of times, looked around, and got up to leave. The other male simply ignored me and carried out his studying. I wanted to try the experiment out on some older people and gauge their reactions. I decided to go to two malls (I needed to buy things from these two malls anyway, so I was not really loitering) and carry out the experiment in the same way I did at the library. It was more difficult finding people at the mall by themselves. At one mall I saw two middle aged women by themselves who were dressed like they just came from work.
