Facebook And Child Abuse

Times have changed. Compared to my childhood in elementary school, all computer activities are a new generation. Elementary school was the only time I used a computer; at school in the computer lab. My family did not have internet access at home, no computer and no WIFI. None of those resources were available to me. I was the oldest of eight children. My siblings and I grew up in a humble Christian home where entertainment was being outdoors playing sports or hide and seek. I remember coming home tired, hungry and short winded from doing outdoor activities. My siblings and I would hit the books then eat dinner. There is additional indecency representation to worry about like nudity, inappropriate language, alcohol or drug abuse and sexually provocative images. The importance of this, is Facebook is not appropriate for children. In fact, ever more less because of the negative energy or influences. Also, there is a lot of disturbing videos on Facebook that cause popularity among teenagers. For example, fights that go viral which can be entertaining for teens. The saddest post of Facebook is of child abuse, very traumatic to watch. Children do not need to learn or be exposed to child abuse. Facebook posts do not always have to be from your friend’s, they can be your friend’s likes and shares so they pop up in newsfeed. That is why children should not have a Facebook, because of the overall negative influences exposed daily. Children should not have a Facebook or any online social media, because they tend to be more careless and immature among younger ages. Especially “teens tend to be more careless and post a lot of personal information like where they go to school” (Rice. 2013’ p.4), where they are at all times and anything a predator wants to know. As I was scrolling down I saw a video posted that really touch me. I am exposed to sad post all the time, but this was beyond that, it was different. It was a video post a couple of months ago of the boy who drowned at River Walk. My daughter went to the same school and knew the boy. Many teenagers started recording as soon as they heard someone is drowning. The video showed the whole incident from before he drowned till he was taken out the water drowned. A teenage girl heard someone was drowning and recorded the whole incident and posted it on Facebook immediately. The sixteen-year old boy was screaming for help yelling “I can’t swim” while people were watching and recording. He then disappears into the water until the first response arrived. The video shows when the fire department pulled the boy out of the water unresponsive and drowned. Unfortunately, CPR did not save his life, he had been under water for nine minutes. The boy did not make it, he died that same night. The video was traumatizing many emotions ran through my mind. The video made me feel sad and emotional all at once, that could have been one of my children. Whoever posted the video breached the family’s privacy, made me realize some people have no heart. My first response, immediately started crying and praying for the boy and his family. Just could not manage to get his image out my mind for days, it is one unforgettable tragedy I will never
