Facebook And Child Abuse

Times have changed. Compared to my childhood in elementary school, all computer activities are a new generation. Elementary school was the only time I used a computer; at school in the computer lab. My family did not have internet access at home, no computer and no WIFI. None of those resources were available to me. I was the oldest of eight children. My siblings and I grew up in a humble Christian home where entertainment was being outdoors playing sports or hide and seek. I remember coming home tired, hungry and short winded from doing outdoor activities. My siblings and I would hit the books then eat dinner. At the dinner table we would talk about all the fun and amazing things we did in our day. Today, many people use the internet …show more content…
There is additional indecency representation to worry about like nudity, inappropriate language, alcohol or drug abuse and sexually provocative images. The importance of this, is Facebook is not appropriate for children. In fact, ever more less because of the negative energy or influences. Also, there is a lot of disturbing videos on Facebook that cause popularity among teenagers. For example, fights that go viral which can be entertaining for teens. The saddest post of Facebook is of child abuse, very traumatic to watch. Children do not need to learn or be exposed to child abuse. Facebook posts do not always have to be from your friend’s, they can be your friend’s likes and shares so they pop up in newsfeed. That is why children should not have a Facebook, because of the overall negative influences exposed daily. Children should not have a Facebook or any online social media, because they tend to be more careless and immature among younger ages. Especially “teens tend to be more careless and post a lot of personal information like where they go to school” (Rice. 2013’ p.4), where they are at all times and anything a predator wants to know. Sharing private information can be prevented if children simply do not have access to internet resources and parents take extra …show more content…
As I was scrolling down I saw a video posted that really touch me. I am exposed to sad post all the time, but this was beyond that, it was different. It was a video post a couple of months ago of the boy who drowned at River Walk. My daughter went to the same school and knew the boy. Many teenagers started recording as soon as they heard someone is drowning. The video showed the whole incident from before he drowned till he was taken out the water drowned. A teenage girl heard someone was drowning and recorded the whole incident and posted it on Facebook immediately. The sixteen-year old boy was screaming for help yelling “I can’t swim” while people were watching and recording. He then disappears into the water until the first response arrived. The video shows when the fire department pulled the boy out of the water unresponsive and drowned. Unfortunately, CPR did not save his life, he had been under water for nine minutes. The boy did not make it, he died that same night. The video was traumatizing many emotions ran through my mind. The video made me feel sad and emotional all at once, that could have been one of my children. Whoever posted the video breached the family’s privacy, made me realize some people have no heart. My first response, immediately started crying and praying for the boy and his family. Just could not manage to get his image out my mind for days, it is one unforgettable tragedy I will never

In “The Undercover Parent,” a newspaper article written by Harlan Coben (in March 16, 2008), Coben insists that parents install spyware on their children’s computer, but to use it only to a specific level. He argues that parents should have this software to make sure that their kids are guarded and that they are not contacting with anyone that may cause them any harm. However, he also understands that parents should not use it to find out personal information or to read the gossip that happens at school. He supports his points by giving many real life examples and connecting them to what parents care about most: their children’s safety. I have come to agree with Coben’s position as I also believe that parents should have this software because…

I can say that almost every single teenager has at least one social media account. We can’t blame social media for everything wrong with kids today. In fact, social media is not the problem, it how they use it. Some teens will use it in a positive way, others will use it in a terrible way where, they bully other kids or start rumors about innocent people. Without doubt when kids start drama on social media, it’s usually for something petty.…

Children need to learn that they have the power to protect themselves. It is important that children are aware of the dangers around them and that they have the tools to make the correct decision to keep them safe. Within a school children can be taught about safety strategies. Talking in a group about situations they may find themselves in and how they would react will allow children to develop their own strategies for safety. These safety strategies need to be age related.…

Parental Spyware: A Debate for the Ages The internet, as well as being an efficient resource, also presents a difficult ethical dilemma for humanity as a whole. More specifically, it presents a debate for parents on whether their children should be allowed on it, as it poses many dangers as well as virtues. This also brings up a topic that many parents avoid: parental spyware. Harlan Coben, a writer and a father of four, faces this issue head-on in his article, “The Undercover Parent”.…

There is currently a debate in North Carolina on whether registered sex offenders should be allowed to use social media sites available to those under the age of 18, or if a ban should be imposed. One of the articles I decided to read is How Vital is Facebook for Free Expression? The article notes that those in favor of the ban argue that sex offenders can gather information on probable victims from sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Furthermore, there are numerous other news outlet and online communication tools available where offenders can communicate with adults, making these sites unnecessary (Hoover, 2017).…

People claim that letting minors use social media at a young age is healthy because they can meet new people and learn new things. Unfortunately, this isn’t safe because parents can’t always protect what their children find online. Minors should not be allowed to use social media because it can expose them to inappropriate content. One reason to not let minors use social media is that minors become exposed. For example, say a person gets mad at someone else and wants to hurt them.…

However, by focusing on the way the “supposedly” positive effects that these children and teens experience by using these social media sites, the authors overlooks the deeper problem of these social networks. The point is that by meeting new people online and having a relationship with them, without actually knowing who they are, is like inviting predators to harm you, or invade your privacy, cyber-bullying, as well as identity theft to your person. Therefore, as parent it is important to moderate what your child is doing on the internet, as well as putting ground rules on the uses of social media…
