How to Reduce the Incidences of Diabetic Retinopathy
The issue that was being researched was reducing diabetic retinopathy through controlling blood sugars, medication compliance, and regular eye exams. Educating diabetic patients on the importance of taking care of their diabetes is a crucial part in the process to prevent long term effects of diabetic retinopathy. The population being researched is adults 18 to 75 years of age, with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and Type 2 diabetes (T2D). Patients had to get one eye exam, A1C tests, and an influenza vaccination that year. Diabetic Retinopathy causes complete vison loss, blurred visions, and the blood vessels in the retina become damaged. The regulation of diabetes and previous health conditions are very crucial in the step being taken to prevent retinopathy, nephropathy, macro-vascular, and neuropathy which are life threatening conditions that run alongside with unmanaged blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and other conditions associate with diabetes (Holt, 2014). The purpose of the study is to educate diabetic patients on the importance of properly managing their health through regulation of the diabetes and previous health conditions to prevent the number of incidence of diabetic retinopathy. Not being properly educated about how to manage diabetes can lead an individual to acquire serious health conditions like diabetic retinopathy, which can cause life threatening consequences; stroke, heart disease, kidney failure, vision loss, and …show more content…
The authors research explored the complications and the long term affects that are associated with T1D and T2D. In 2014, the Aiello Group conducted a candidate gene research study to see if there was a high correlation between one studied trait and the genetic variant based on the way that the gene was meant to function. It was found that there were no correlation to diabetic retinopathy with the other complications. Only a direct correlation to the genomic region of DR through chromosomes 1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 15, 19, and 20 (Alkayyali, & Lyssenko, 2014). Conducting this study allowed the scientist and medical field staff to develop a treatment plan so that everyone can regulate, monitor, and control their diabetes to prevent serious health
