Norms are expectations society has about how people behave, and although norms are not considered formal laws, they allow for social control (). The scene that caught my eye the most was when they were discussing who should be the main priority to protect from the flu because of my goal to become a medical doctor. It amazed that still that the value of protect the young and elderly from the “flu” did not change, even through the rest of their society is more “cut throat”(or survival of the fittest) than ours. This shows how much social norms play a role in what we do, even when the situation does not call for it.
Lastly, a sociological aspects that deserves some attention is social order, which is about how people behave in society (). Social norms. Social norms are rules of behavior that are considered acceptable by a group or society, but what if the social norm happens to be oppressing and discriminating an entire race of people based solely on the color of their skin, how is it still considered right? And what if half of a nation relied on this idea of social norm in order to power their economy? This social norm I have described was slavery. And the half of nation I’m referring to that depended upon the continued idea of this social norm in order to power their economy was the south during pre-civil war times.…

Society and social normality’s influence a work of literature in a great way. The stories we have read in class such as, “New York Day Women” by Edwidge Danticat and “The Girl with Bangs” by Zadie Smith, are both significantly influenced by society or social norms. There are two other pieces of literature which can correspond to these influences as well. They are “Quality Control” by Edwidge Danticat and “Meet the President!” by Zadie Smith. All of these works both validate and deviate from traditional society.…

As I was binge-watching Seinfeld on Netflix over the weekend, I came across a lot of different sociological issues and situations. It then occurred to me that you could take almost any TV show or movie and find examples of different sociological patterns, or norms, for example, as I was talking about with Seinfeld, thinking its just a classic 90’s sitcom that is suppose to be funny, but has no substance, but in actuality it shows plenty of social norms in behavior, and interactions with others in a society. To be specific, in one of the episodes titled “Parallel parking” it was all about what kind of norms were accepted for parking in the city. This episode is one big argument between the two main guys fighting about the various norms related…

The second part of my experiment made me realize that in both of my experiment the people have similar reactions on why they didn’t tell me that my phone was ringing up, and I wonder if that one male wasn’t there what would have happened. By me going in and having my phone turned on full volume, when we know that in situations like this you either have to put your phone on silent, turned off, or on vibrate, I broke up this social norm. I wonder myself since when it has become a social norm to not let a person know that their phone was ringing even if they were apparently unaware. An explanation to this is that some people just didn’t care, while some thought I couldn’t hear it ringing up, whereas others thought I was just ignoring the calls…

It is well known that when socializing it is expected of you to look straight ahead and pay attention to the person with eye contact. This norm is used to control people when they are talking to people, as a way of ensuring the said person is paying attention to the conversation. This week when I go to class or when anyone is talking to me I will do everything normally, except look at the person speaking. I will look up at the ceiling or some other fixed point in the room, focusing on it and not looking anywhere else. I believe if I do this people will think I am not interested in the conversation and may become irritated or uncomfortable.…

Society is constructed of many expectations on the proper way to behave in a given situation, and those expectations are considered to be the norms in society. These norms are written, spoken and otherwise indicated, and are in place to create peace and harmony for all the members of society. As we compare the many rules that govern our society in the form of folkways, mores, taboos and laws, we begin to understand the value of each one, as well as the consequences for disregarding them. Out of these rules, the most severe consequences come from violating the social norms through acts of crime pertaining to criminal law.…
