Abstract
This essay will reflect on the educational field and the importance of the teacher. It will emphasize the arduous journey to become an educator and the constant scrutiny that educators face day to day. The essay will emphasize the roles of Horace Mann and Thomas Jefferson and their impact on public education. It will reflect on teacher accountability. The essay will discuss infamous legislation such as the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). The essay will briefly describe how the Elementary and Secondary Education Act helped shape the No Child legislation. It will reflect on the personal experiences of professional educators and their opinions on the NCLB legislation. Educators are under the ever watchful eye of the public. If an educator fails, it seems that they are automatically and unfairly chastised for their results. Even if the educator has a successful year, they still are eluded the credit they deserve. Students are simply test scores in the eyes of the federal government. If the school fails, then the problem is with the school and not the legislation. The federal government has played a vital role in shaping public education and educational reform. Important figures such as Thomas Jefferson and Horace Mann played an essential role in shaping the public education system and providing an equal opportunity for every student. Federal legislation such as the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and the No Child Left Behind Legislation (NCLB) have shaped the guidelines that school districts must abide by.
