Students Council Essay: Why Have A Student Council?

Decent Essays
Why have a Student Council? The American Student Council Association has been apart of schools for over 30 years. The reason why schools agreed to student council to be apart of their schools is to have a specific group of students be an influence to others by being an example of leadership, confidence, encouragement, loyalty, teamwork, and responsibility. You’d think most schools would jump to have this organization apart of their schools, but you’d be surprised at how many don’t have it or have the group and not give them enough opportunity to be examples in leadership. Student Council is a very valuable and important organization that schools all over the country find necessary for the student body to have. It’s a voice for the voiceless …show more content…
Some say the faculty will not give them a chance to speak to them about issues in the school, others disagree with letting student have a way of voicing their own opinions, and some can’t afford another organization. Most of these are just examples of excuses schools use because they might be afraid of letting students voice their opinion. Why have a student council? By William S. Sterner tells us of different ways free public schools had affected not only communities but also the students in them. During the first World War the concern for students education grew. To have a good education was not as important to some students as it once was. Between World War I and world War II education was a battle. With the great depression added to the problem after the first war most students worked all day instead of attending school. Students began to care less about their education, because the school faculty gave them less opportunities to speak out against what they believed in, Like how some students protested the war in an attempt to stop them. Granet it didn 't work, but they had the right to freedom of speech and they took advantage of it. Just like the way Student Council does for their fellow classmates, they take advantage of their right to freedom of speech by being the voice for the student …show more content…
Student council is here to do greater. To hold a specific selection of students to a higher standard. They are to be an example of leadership to their classmates, To promote the interests of the student body to the school administration along with staff and parents. To inform the students about an issue that may concern them. To consult with students about any issues that are important. To organize financial campaigns for school and charitable activities. These are among the many responsibilities the organization strives for. In my interview with Ms. Holloway, our school 's Student Council Advisor, said “ Student Council helps shape the school environment for students.” She also mentioned, “ Student Council in our own school allows student creativity to flow more openly and in a more positive way, which also allows them to be creative in ways to express their leadership skills.” “We are also already held to a higher standard, because we are involved in the community and

I earned my first leadership role at the age of two. At that age, I became my sister’s role model. It was up to me to teach her the tricks of the trade for everything-- from tying her shoes to studying for her first math test. Although I didn’t have any designated leadership positions during my early years of high school, it was the similarly intimate, accidental moments of leadership that colored my participation in my extracurriculars.…

I would love to be a member of the senior planning team because the senior planning team helps promote change within the school. I believe, along with many other leadership teams at Alpena High School, the senior planning team is empowered by the staff, administration, and other seniors to make important decisions that powerfully impact the school and senior class. Without the senior planning team, many decisions would be left to the staff/administration to decide and, while this is still an excellent way to accomplish tasks, it removes the student involvement in the school. I am so grateful to have a school that values student input because it teaches its students how to take responsibility for their learning environment. As a member of the…

Through student council I have worked closely with my teachers and advisors to better my school by bringing our student body together for events such as pep rallies and competitive games during homecoming week. I have also made great friendships with peers outside of my usual classrooms which has helped shape me into a well rounded person. With National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society, we have bettered our community through projects such as a can food drive and buying Christmas gifts for children in need. National Honor Society has also helped me gain connections with our local Special Olympics where I volunteered this past year and plan to continue volunteering. In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…
