The civil war was a time of great suffering, amputation, disease, and imprisonment but it was also an era of great creativity, development, and invention. While the civil war was a bad time for the U.S. it also helped the U.S. develop in important ways. This paper will discuss how the civil war changed America with its many innovations in transportation and communication, weapons and small innovations, and new laws/documents. Although the civil war was an ugly time for America it was also a time of some amazing innovations. One of the first innovations in weapons during the civil war was the Minie bullet. This bullet created a spin inside a rifle barrel and was able to work as an exploding bullet and could hit the target you were aiming at for up to 300 yards. Later new rifles were developed and one of the few developed was the repeating rifle by the union army. The union army developed this rifle which allowed a few shots in quick succession and could be used throughout on the battlefield and later discovered a new weapon called the Gatling gun. The Gatling gun was a machine gun that was first used by the union army in 1864, but was hard to operate and always had a lot of problems so it wasn’t the army’s weapon of choice. Another weapon that was designed during the civil war was a battleship known as the iron gun ship. The iron on this battleship was super thick, difficult to sink, and the battleship was usually loaded with canons all around. This ship forever changed naval warfare for America as the union armies decided to keep making them.
