For my writing research question I will be talking about how texting and slang is affecting students writing. I gathered a lot of information from an article online by Annie Martin called "Texting Slang Creeps Into Students Writing". There has been multiple arguments about how texting affects a great amount of student's way of writing and how formal written assignments are taken too lenient, therefore students are unconsciously using slang. Instructors nationally and locally are finding that English essays with formal English can appear like a great task who tirelessly work their thumbs to send instant messages with 160-character breaking points.

According to more than 2,462 teachers polled from throughout the United States, this informal style of writing is sneaking its way into academic essays and reports (Martin, 2013). Unfortunately, this has led to a decline in student’s writing abilities that is becoming progressively more evident in all types of communication. With the line between a formal and informal style of writing and language blurred, the College Board, which administers the SAT college admissions test, reports that fewer students have writing skills on par with what is expected for acceptance to college. As of 2012, less than half of the nation’s high school graduates were determined to be ready for college-level writing based on their SAT scores (Martin, …show more content…
However, there is a high cost associated with this added convenience. This cost is a decline in language, grammar, and writing skills that can be almost impossible for a teen to conquer when they transition to adulthood. Interestingly, the same study found that middle school aged students were most likely to use “tech speak” in an assignment because they send twice as many text messages as any other age group.
Unfortunately, how to stop the use of texting grammar rules and cyber slang from invading academic work is not a task with a clear cut answer, especially when dealing with students who have already allowed it to creep into their own
