How Terrorism Impacted Our Nation
You look up into the blue sky as sound explodes around you, and suddenly great clouds of smoke and ash are rumbling upwards. Fire rages through the collapsing Twin Towers. Disbelief and shock flood over you as you realize that thousands of people just took their last breath. This is how you may have felt if you were there on September 11, 2001, when terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center and the Pentagon after hijacking four commercial airplanes. The attacks had an immense effect on America because of the amount of destruction that occurred, both of structures and lives. The events of 9/11 affected America primarily in three ways: airline anxiety and security was increased, the emotional state was shaken, and the economy was damaged.

The attacks brought about thousands of deaths, both of initial victims and rescue workers who were killed saving others, and as a result, intense emotions surfaced. A wide array of feelings was felt, including anger towards the terrorists, fear of further bombardment, sorrow for the great loss, and thankfulness for loved ones that still lived. Depending on people’s reactions, greater focus on positive relationships, religious beliefs, and patriotism occurred, but so did hate crimes, depression, and prejudice toward non-radical Muslims.
Furthermore, the events of September 11 had a destructive effect on the economic state of America. Not only did the stock market take a blow due to the collapse of the World Trade Center, but costs of initial response, investigations for combatting terrorism, and reconstruction also created economic strain. The World Trade Center was a source of revenue and stability, and its destruction stripped away massive amounts of money. As a result, America’s economy slid further
