How Tennis Changed My Life

I was down 4 to 6 in a final set tiebreaker, the championship point of the US Open, against my number 1 rival, in what might be the most meaningful game of both of our careers. My legs trembling, heart racing, and my palms covered with a thin layer of sweat from the 80 degree sun. I served the ball and it flew to the other side of the court a million miles per hour. I stood there amazed to see that I stole the point with an ace, with my opponent shocked at the brilliance of the serve. The next point started off with a frustrating shot into the net, time for my second serve. As I stood there on the verge of losing this important game, my whole life flashed before my eyes, I recalled the plethora of hard work I put myself through to earn a chance …show more content…
During summer break I participated in some tournaments to put my skills to the real test. “Rafael Nadal,” I heard my name being called at the front desk. My opponent stood at a towering 6 foot, a strong guy with brown hair, we were given three tennis balls. I fought hard in the match but I was nothing compared to the guy I faced, I realized I would have to work a lot harder in order to win matches, and tournaments. I had 1 month until my next tournament and I used every single second on honing my skills and becoming stronger, and all my work paid off because I earned my first win. I kept consistent with my training and tournaments and found myself having a lot of …show more content…
I heard a shout from the crowd as I was about to hit the second serve. Thinking of my journey up to the US open finals motivated me to take advantage of the moment, and that I did. I tossed the ball up, raised my racket up, loaded my legs, and swung at the ball, it was hands down the best shot I even hit. We were all tied up 8 to 8 and it was now my opponents turn to serve, and now the pressure shifted to his side of the court. He took his time while I stood in position, preparing to return a bullet serve. I leaned toward the left expecting the serve there. He served it, the ball barely clipped the right corner of the box. With my momentum taking me the other way, I had to jerk my whole body to the other side to barely hit the ball over the net. I dashed all the way to the other side of the court to hit the next ball and lob it up way high having no other option. My arch rival set up for a powerful smash, the ball made contact with his racket, Pow! He slammed the ball and it unfortunately tipped the net and bounced back on his side. I somehow regained the lead, 7-6 one more point for me would win the game. At that particular moment I felt the pressure of the moment like a 500 pound boulder on my shoulder. I had no idea of how to handle the pressure but there I was well aware of someone who did, Pete Sampras, my idol. I took a second and praised Pete Sampras, asking him to help me, for he always handled the

During my younger years my dad, who played tennis when he was younger, coached me and taught me how to hit my basic ground strokes such as backhands and forehands. As I entered high school, I went out for the tennis team and made the junior varsity team. It was during my first year on the team that I learned about how much fun it was to be on a sports team. What I loved the most was that even as a freshman, I was able to make friends older than me who served as my mentors for both school and my tennis…

I learned that winning a tennis match is all about mentality. I had to constantly push myself or the opponent could easily capitalize on my mistakes. Tires crunched on the loose gravel parking lot as I was dropped off at my high school’s tennis courts on the first day of school. With my high school requiring a year of physical education, I opted to take the lifetime sport for I was nervous to compete for a spot on the highly competitive teams my school was known for. I was met at the court by 30 other freshmen with a mixed variety of expertise spanning from the first time to ever hold a racquet to a district ranked player. The district ranked player’s father, Mr. Weaver, was a sophomore chemistry teacher who happened to play tennis professionally in his heyday. Mr. Weaver volunteered to teach the freshman tennis team and to train them the basics before they were transferred to “the real…

While playing tennis, I realized that I had to give up certain things in order to fit in enough practice to win the matches. For example, I made sacrifices when I gave up my other activities to dedicate my time for tennis training. The sacrifices I made allowed me to improve in my skills and provided me with good decisions in life. Furthermore, tennis shaped me into the person I am today by teaching me to make sacrifices for things that are more important. For example, I gave up sleep to get up early for tennis practices.…

Not known for his knifing slice backhand or an efficient net game, Raonic used both under McEnroe’s tutelage to become the first Canadian man to play for a Grand Slam title. On the other side of the net, Murray displayed tremendous defense, sending forehands and backhands past Raonic when he dared to approach the net. Murray, the Scottish tennis star who returned Raonic’s serve better than anyone else had in the tournament, played very well off of the favorable Wimbledon crowd and turned their support into extra motivation. Most notably, in a 2-2 third set, Murray faced his first break points of the final, trailing 40-15 in the fifth game. Murray prevailed in the game, highlighted by a backhand winner and an unreturnable serve.…

A few days later, we had practice and when I arrived no one appeared to be mad at me even the coaches. After all, I'd lost us the game and the championship, and the had to be disappointed about not having a shot at the finals.…

I then proceeded to flip the ball into the air and swung at it like a baseball. I hit the ball with such velocity that it left a massive dent in the post of the net before going in making the score of the game 9-6. The fans were throwing out such praises as “better looking Gretzky” or “greatest athlete of our time” at me. As true as they all were I tried to remain humble about the comments. Scott tried taking a quick shot but he ended up missing our net by 26.37 feet.…

However, the success I felt wasn’t centered around my wins at the tournament, instead focused on the confidence I had gained in my abilities. I no longer felt the need to prove my skills, and had reached a point where I could say I was comfortable with failure as long as I knew I had pushed myself. This newly discovered confidence made all of the hours of work and all of the mental and physical exhaustion I had felt during the season worth…
