How Technology Will Evolve in Distance Education
Introduction
The purpose of this paper is to discuss how technology will evolve over the next five to ten years. Technology is a major component that is driving change in distance education. The different technologies we have today are different from the past and the future. Technology is constantly evolving to meet the needs of the present and future. Some futurists at one of the world’s major telecommunications companies made predictions of some technological developments. Some of their predictions included: tactile sensors, full voice interaction with machines, TV Internet users will overtake computer users, and 3D video conferencing (Moore & Kearsley, 2012, p. 278). M-learning has arose out of the universal acceptance of mobile devices which able students to use these devices to support their learning at all times (Cleveland- Innes & Garrison, 2010, p. 205). As the world is changing, the needs are too. We are in a day and age where people are constantly on the go and need information quickly. Learning Management Systems, video conferencing, and mobile technology will all have a major role in distance education within the next five to ten years. Learning Management Systems allow for all learning to take place in one platform. This is an important need. Students save additional time by having all resources in one place. Distance education is appealing to students on the go or with other life happenings. Mobile technology allows for students to get their learning experiences without being in the same location. They are able to take their learning with them. Video conferencing allows for students to have a similar face-to- to face experience without being in the same location. Lastly, mobile technology allows for you to video conference and access your LMS on the go. These three technologies combine can change the face of distance
