English Cueing System Essay

Skilled readers are able to employ the cueing systems in order to make meaning of what they are reading. As readers, when we come across a word or sentence that we do not understand, if we grasp the concepts of the phonological, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic systems, we will be able to successfully use our knowledge to uncover the meaning of the word and comprehend the task at hand, whether it be during reading, writing, speaking, or listening. Having a solid understanding of these cueing systems is very important for every reader, so it is necessary that teachers create opportunities for students to have meaningful instruction and interactions with each system.

The syntactic system deals with the structure of the English language. Words in the English language must be combined in a certain way in order for the phrase to make sense. If a student understands this concept, they will be able to infer the word’s meaning based on what its role should be in the sentence. For example, if the difficult word is placed where a noun would be, the student would have an idea that the word must be a person, place, or thing. The syntactic system also deals with prefixes, suffixes, and other word endings. If these are added to a root word that the student already knows, the student can determine that the addition of these parts changes the meaning of the word they are trying to …show more content…
Semantic maps are used often in my middle school classroom in order to map out a word or concept and allow students to identify and remember the meaning of a new word while building new background knowledge. A semantic map shows relationships between words and concepts. They can include pictures, phrases, synonyms, antonyms, and related concepts. Teachers can begin semantic mapping together as a group in order to build their confidence and then allow opportunities for further
