Friend or foe? Good or evil? Helpful or harmful? These are all great questions associated with technology in today’s society. From the new iPhone 7 to self-driving cars technology can either be beneficial or detrimental. In certain cases technology may be helpful, but is it really necessary? Is the evolution of technology really bettering our society or is it sending us down a dangerous path that will ultimately lead to destruction? The progression of technology in human civilization is a foe; it’s uncontrollable, unpredictable, takes commitment, and complicates life. Technology can be reliable for certain tasks; however, as the advancements in technology progress, human control over the technology is minimized. As seen in “Liar,” by Isaac …show more content…
George Musser elaborates on the consciousness of machines in his article “Could Machines Become Self Aware Without Us Knowing?”: “A basic result in computer science is that self-referential systems are inherently unpredictable: a small change can snowball into a vastly different outcome as the system loops back on itself” (Musser 1). To simply put it, systems with a consciousness are known for being unreliable. Everyone still thinks of technology as just a metal computer that calculates numbers and is used for research, but once people realize that technology, particularly AIs, can appeal to senses of emotion, lie, and empathize, they’ll realize the insecurity of them. There is a rating procedure known as the “ConsScale” which classifies technology with a level of consciousness but it’s not completely accurate, it all depends on what is defined as consciousness and that is still debatable. We have no 100% way to determine and guarantee the consciousness of technology, whether it’s already there or in the near future. It’s unpredictability poses itself as a danger to humans which could be …show more content…
Eric Brende describes his life in Better Off: “The older I grew, the more deserted the street became--except for cars, of course, which had multiplied over time and made playing out-of-doors more perilous” (Brende 6). Before technology progressed, kids used to run through the streets playing with their friends but with cars everywhere, kids have to take much more precautious actions. Eric Brende describes his technology filled life and how he and his wife make the decision to go live with an Amish community with no electricity for a year in hopes of living a simpler life and defining the line between too much and too little technology. In our society, no one has ever drawn a line that clearly says how much technology is too much, and even if there is somewhat of a line, it is encouraged to be crossed. We praise advancements in technology without completely processing the complications and repercussions of it and humans will eventually suffer the consequences.
Technology in our society is growing whether through schools, hospitals, or the military. Although it may not be directly harmful in short term perspective, as it continues to advance, the consequences in the long run are extremely detrimental. The uncontrollability, unpredictability, commitment, and complications in life are issues that will continue to prove that technology is a harmful, foe in our

Technology is overcoming our lives. It is tearing us from nature, and it is allowing us freedom to do as we please. Richard Louv does an acceptable job of explaining this in a passage from "Last Child in the Woods." He creates a cocktail of ideas and rhetoric alike to form a well thought out analysis of evolution of technology, mainly one of a car in his, versus the nature that surrounds us and a simpler time at that. Richard Louv begins his passage with a detailed version of advertisement.…

Have you ever wondered how technology works or if is even good or bad for the people that use it or even for our society? Technology can have its good sides which are helping people communicate much faster and find solutions much faster than they have before but it can also have its bad sides like affecting the way that people communicate now, which is less than people use to talk before. Gina Tsuge argues that technology can be good or bad depending on whose hands it is on and the way that technology can be used by people.
