It’s no big surprise to anyone when they are told that students are distracted by technology, however there seem to be a shortage of ideas about how to fix the problem. Most adults, when asked how to stop kids from being distracted by their phones or laptops seem to think that the technology is to blame, and suggest banning all of it from the classroom.

For all of history, people have feared change. Idealizing the past has been around since ancient times. People always seem to think that the current generation of teenagers bring nothing but trouble, and that when they themselves were seventeen, they were perfect angels. In the time of the Greek philosophers, records have been found of adults complaining about how children no longer listen to their parents as they did ‘back in the day’. Really, teaching children to have a sense of wonder towards the world is really more important that restricting their distractions. If a child really wants to discover more about the world, they will do so whether they are instructed to do so or not. Students should be allowed to customize their classes much earlier than they currently are and should be strategically matched with teachers whose teaching style matches the unique way each child learns. By the time their students graduate, instructors should be excited to unleash such vibrant, enthusiastic individuals upon the world, not relieved that the new adults have actually managed to pass their classes.
