Nursing is one of the professions that are rapidly evolving within the medical field. Over the past 50 years, the practice has changed beyond recognition with changes in health care, shifting the entire practice of medication and nursing. Technology has ultimately assisted in the changes and advancement of nursing with increased modifications in how patients are maintained and how medications are tracked and ordered. Technology is essential within the nursing industry, as it is required for patient charting and medication distribution, not much is performed with pen and paper in the hospital environment, as opposed to 50 years ago. Contrasting to previous years, there have been multiple changes in advances in technology influencing the interaction between patients in essentially every aspect. In the preceding years, technological advancements which involve new medicines, IV therapy, and administration of blood products were not accessible. As a result, the level of care was affected, as they lacked their indispensable resources. Furthermore, nurses could not essentially access technological devices like computers, safer administration, and patient monitoring devices. In the 1960’s before computers, plastics, and disposable materials, there was a fair amount of time spent on just preparing instruments and equipment that were to be used by patients. The nurses who previously worked in the 1960’s have a different perspective on how nursing as a profession has changed. In the 1960’s they had very little technology, Rauner, who is a nurse gives a brief description of some of her interactions with the 1960’s technology “we had cardiac monitors in the day, but the only place was in the ICU. Nursing has come far in saving lives since the 60’s. “In nursing school, we didn’t have a crash car. When we were student, no one coded. They just died” . Technology impacts the industry as it eliminates repetitive and mundane tasks, accomplish regulatory work, provide more efficient use of space, improve the environment of care and provide access to resources, therefore improving safety and efficiency. As technology reduces the time wastage, nurses now have more direct care time and safer care. The development of technology has affected the nurses and the wider community as monitoring devices with nurse call systems have the capability to provide alerts when problems are imminent. Technology that enables timely tracking, acquisition of equipment, supplies, and people, reduce delays in care. The improved technologies that provide communication in which prioritise messages and requests as a way to enable responses to patients, improves the safety of patients. The Healthcare environment is potentially becoming virtual as many mobile devices have moved care outside hospitals, which adds to patient convenience for monitoring chronic and acute conditions . The information and communication technologies that are used in the health care field have many positive and negative advantages which influence the industry, the employers, patients, and the wider community.
