Census, we can gather the sum that 76% of households reported having a computer in 2011, compared with only 8% in 1984. Of that number, 72% of households reported accessing the Internet, up from just 18% in 1998, the first year the Census asked about Internet use (File). Since a large majority of the population by 2011 had access to the internet with a computer it made being able to connect to social media extremely easy which makes sense since Facebook which was opened on February 4th 2004 and now has well over 1 billion registered users, 500 million of which have connected to the “Facebook messenger app”, with an average time of 6 and a half hours per month spent on Facebook which makes it 1 out of every 7 minutes for the average user, and each day Facebook users collectively log 10.5 billion minutes which turns to be 20,000 years. To back up some of that data I asked a simple question to multiple people from most age groups, they were asked “Do you feel distant if you leave your phone at home?” When asked this a majority of people answered with a solid yes, but what really caught my eye was the idea that a fair few said that they almost never have their phone with them. Within today’s society it is almost always expected to have a form of smartphone which is shown by the growth in use of QR codes that anyone can scan to gain special discounts exclusive to smartphone users.
With such a dependence on using technology to talk to friends and family people can easily say that “there are nothing but upsides to the whole situation” that may seem like the case since it is a major upgrade since the message can be delivered basically instantly with the click of the send button.
