She essentially says that the internet links likeminded people together. “Instinctively we drift toward people like ourselves” (331). In her comic, she also states that since we naturally flock to likeminded people it happens on the internet as well creating a “virtually impermeable echo chamber” (332). She also touches on the subject on ignoring the bad things that go on in the world in order to tolerate the things going on. She states “How do we develop intellectually or morally if we can evade encounters with the unfamiliar, the unwelcome, and the unimagined” (333). I think that Gladstone is in a sense right about the idea if we keep our eyes shut and mouths shut on the bad things that are going on in the world, we will be in for a rude awakening. There are so many things going on online, for example cyber-bullying. So many pre-teens as well as teens have been cyber-bullied and people aren’t really doing anything about it. There are so many mentally disturbed people in the world who use the internet just like everyone else. These people can use the information you put online to potentially find you. There have been many cases about such tragedies as these. For example there is a movie “Megan is missing”, that is based on a true story, about two fourteen year old girls, Megan, and her best friend Amy, who venture online and meets a seventeen year old guy named Josh in a chatroom. As the plot thickens, Megan meets Josh face-to- face and he turns out to be someone completely different and then he proceeds to kidnap and kill Megan. At the end of the movie, Josh comes back to kidnap Megan’s best friend Amy, who is met with the same fate as Megan. Death. It’s truly a shame how tragic situations such as this can change ones mind completely on the greater good on technology.
