The Effect of Technology on Sleep Today’s society is crazy about technology. The world is full of technology, and it is everywhere we look. Technology makes it possible to stay connected to everything that happens in the world at any time of the day. Many people would say that this is a good thing, but there can be consequences to using technology. Although technology is important, using technology before bed can negatively affect a person’s sleep patterns and health; therefore, Americans need to limit technology use before going to bed. The relationship between electronics and bedtime has changed monumentally. Studies show that 90% of Americans report some technology use in the hour before bed (Grandner). Using technology before bed will harm sleep patterns and the blame is placed on one thing, blue light. All smartphones, tablets, computers, and televisions emit a bluish light (Issacson). As the blue light radiates into your eyes, it switched the brain from night to day. Studies show that lack of sleep can cause an increase in obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. “A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS) showed that chronic sleep deprivation causes “shifts” in the expression levels of more than 700 genes”. Technology is a typical reason why people are not getting the sleep needed to function (Issacson). Sleep deprivation causes increased stress and worsening sleep patterns. Poor sleep habits will cause low performance at work or school. Sleep deprivation causes stress, which can lead to problems at work. Problems at work can lead to staying up late on computers to finish work. Using a computer before bed leads to poor sleep, which leads to sleep deprivation.
