In John Holt’s “How teachers make children hate reading”, Holt argues that rather than students trying to understand what they’re reading or writing they should simply just enjoy it. He claims that when teacher’s stress to their students “understanding” and not making mistakes interferes with the student’s growth as readers and writers. Holt provides many supporting arguments that strengthen his claim. One claim that I agree with is when Holt states, “Third, and most important, we learn to write by writing, not by reading other people’s ideas about writing.
