Reflection: Contemporary Issues In American Education Class

Improved Essays
After reviewing my internship log and reflecting on other activities embedded in the different courses, I found activities that were directly related to school improvement. I participated in many activities that led to school improvement at the school where I currently work. For example, in my Contemporary Issues in American Education class I prepared a report on our school concerning teacher absences. I made a chart of the number of days certified teachers were absent each month of the 2014-2015 school year. This report gave insight on how teacher absences impact student learning. It showed how many teachers from my school were absent on a regular basis from August 2015 to June 2015. The results were unbelievable. The students were …show more content…
This plan would be put in place for the safety and wellbeing of the students and staff. This plan is a plan to upgrade the Crisis Information Chart that we currently have in place. For this plan, I recommend that our School Leadership Team choose several staff and community members to serve on the crisis team along with providing a specific room so that the team would know where to go to strategize and make decisions concerning different crisis. The team should also develop procedures to activate support services, channeling communication, controlling rumors, and bringing closure to the …show more content…
I surveyed our school counselor, a classroom teacher, and our Dean of Students at the time. The results of the survey found that fighting was our main discipline issue. At the time of the survey, we were having fights at our school three to four times a day. The fights began over something that was so minute that by the time the students finished fighting they forgot what they were fighting about. Most fights started because of miscommunication and at a time where they were unsupervised. I recommended that students are supervised at all times by an adult. Most students were left unsupervised while traveling from class to an activity or vice versa. If students are continually left unsupervised, that teacher responsible will be reprimanded. I also recommended that our Dean of Students become more knowledgeable of the actions needed when disciplining students. We no longer have a Dean of Students but an Assistant Principal who handles discipline for our

I also assisted with child abuse and neglect investigations (CAN), intake, individualized service plans (ISPs), comprehensive family assessments (CFAs), entered data into Family, Adult, and Child Tracking System (FACTS), and continued to monitor the families I serve through home visitations. My favorite part of the internship experience outside of increasing the morale around the office, has been to work with families through the ISP process. This process is put in place in efforts to reunify the family. It gives me great joy to watch the family work on a plan to help them gain custody of their children.…

On May 20, 2016, my adviser and I sat down to have a discussion about the university required courses and courses that was mandatory for the Liberal Arts college. English 101 was one of the classes I chose to take my first semester because I knew I had more knowledge on writing efficient papers because of my previous AP English courses in high school. In high school, I was always told that I was an adequate writer because I knew the basic of connecting ideas that provided a clear concrete understanding. However, the only time I received an unsatisfactory score was when the information I included in my paper was unorganized. Also, another reason I chose to take English my first semester instead of my second semester was because I knew I needed…

Implications for practice from the conclusions of the study would be for teachers to use a classroom management plan that involves positive reinforcement and not public shame. When students are coming from different backgrounds, whether it be SES, race, culture, or something else, it is necessary for the teacher to be sensitive to that. The major focus of PDCMM was to “train and encourage teachers to treat students with respect and try to maintain a warm and supportive relationship with all students.” (Akpo-Sanni, Pg. 13) Proactive and preventative intervention was helpful in the research study to decreasing discipline problems and suspensions. In order to create the positive classroom environment necessary for student success, there is a “need for schools’ leadership teams to prepare a school-wide discipline plan, and to focus on classroom management professional development on developing a positive and warm classroom climate and classroom culture.”…

Within limits, discipline is a crucial aspect of Love and Logic; but should be viewed as what teachers can do with students rather than what teachers can do for them. When disciplining a student, the student must realize he still has rights as a student and as an individual. If a student believes his rights are being dishonored then he will not respond as positively to the teachers requirements. Having control of the disciplinary situation involves teachers understanding things from the perspective of the student. Teachers need to be aware that a student will try to shift the blame to anyone but himself.…

Spending two and half hours in each classroom, I learned a great deal about early childhood education from ages birth through eight, and the effort and skills that it takes to create a stimulating learning environment. For my infant, toddler, and preschool observations, I spent my hours at the CCC Childcare Center located in our college while for my kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade observations, I spent my time at Casey Park Elementary School. During my observations at the CCC Childcare Center, I learned plenty about the methods and practices that go into early education before primary grades. The preschool classroom really stood out to me because the centers in the classroom were very open ended and filled with lots of manipulative for…

In the United States the two most common types of schools are private and public. Public schools are free and private schools are paid for. These types of schools and their student bodies speak to the diversity, or lack of, in the classroom. This is one issue that is hard to solve and address because there are many underlying issues like race and class. The goal of American education is to provide quality education to all citizens, but I have learned from this class that America is still working to do so.…
