This research focuses on the use of self-assessment strategies and investigates the question, “Can Student Self-Assessment Strategies Create Higher Achievement Gains?”
Introduction
In order to answer the first question, What is the effect of self-assessment/progress monitoring strategies on student achievement based upon end-of unit assessments?, a pre-test, post-test, and formative assessment data were collected from sixty sixth grade science students over an eight week period. To answer the second question, in the students’ opinions, do self-assessment strategies improve their learning?, surveys were collected from students at the beginning and end of the research study.

In order to determine the answers to these two important questions of this research study, data was gathered in a different way for each question.
What is the effect of self-assessment/progress monitoring strategies on student achievement based upon end-of unit assessments? According to Spiller, self-assessment/progress monitoring is a process of formative assessment during which students reflect on and evaluate the quality of their work and their learning, judge the level of proficiency to which they understand clearly stated goals or criteria, identify strengths and weaknesses in their work, and revise accordingly (2012). To answer this question students were first given a pre-assessment. Throughout the unit, students in two class periods kept reflective writing journals and were required to reflect upon their learning after each learning target was addressed. Self-assessment gets students thinking critically about their educational needs, while increasing student motivation. It is an ongoing process that all people do on a daily basis, whether it is realized or not. Teaching students to become self aware through self-assessment will give students skills they need in other content areas as well as in many other aspects of their life.
Generalizability and Potential Contributions In terms of generalizability, this research could be replicated in other classroom settings. However, results will vary based on school demographics and student backgrounds. The contributions of this study will be significant to students to increase motivation and make achievement gains in their education. Each student learns differently, and it is important that students develop the means of assessing and being in charge of their learning. Validity, Reliability and Study
