How Stephen King Influenced Me

A book that strongly influenced me would be On Writing by Stephen King. Truthfully speaking, I initially picked up the book because of its title. I hated reading because it was always a requirement and rarely for leisure. I intended that by reading this book, it would improve my writing techniques. But, I was shaken by how much I enjoyed the book and the art of memoirs. I was awakened from my wrongful interpretations on reading and the craft of writing. I did not dislike reading, but it was the type of writing that I loathed. To this day, I am grateful for my accidental ignorance because this book was the spark that started my stream of memoir readings.

The institution’s absoluteness about the importance of a balanced education stands out to me. From my perspective, Colombia's long history was only a supplement to its achievements. It was the acceptance of its faculty for students to explore their possibilities that shaped the recognized alumni of the University. The extensive resources allocated to students allow for the exploration of their limitless ideas and demonstrates the school’s support for students’ decisions. From these supportive gestures, students develop a mindset that anything is possible. In addition to this, the Core Curriculum also plays a significant role in the development of this mindset. The curriculum’s focus on the important ideas of western civilization and non-western culture and how it has influenced today's society slowly constructs its students’ mindset to think about their environment and how they can contribute or influence it. It is this mindset that I hope to have during my time at Columbia; however, I also hope to be leaving with practical applications on how to implement this mindset in the real world by the time I

I spent more and more time emulating my grandfather as an oral historian, bombarding my mother with verbose accounts of daily adolescent life. However, as my social life suffered from a lack of interpersonal confidence, I channeled more and more of my imaginative thoughts onto paper. Rarely did I have the time to compose a fully fleshed-out story; instead, I recalled the poetic beauty of my great-grandfather’s broken English and jotted my thoughts into journals full of lilting stanzas that I shared frequently during Poetry Club at my first high school. Then, at Mission Vista High, I found even more opportunities to flaunt my virtues as an author and storyteller.…

My favorite book I have read since the last portfolio conference was called Watchmen by Alan Moore. It was also Extremely influential as it was the first novel or indeed graphic novel handling things like sexuality, rape, rioting, police brutality, and mental illness with such a firm basis in reality. It also really immerses you into these problems with extremely compelling and real characters which draws you into the story. Also because it is a graphic format there are so many fun little details to look at they almost distract you from the depressingly truthful commentary on the human condition.…

“I know applying to colleges is the last thing you want to do right now, but you might change your mind,” a trusted friend told me. It was December of my senior year of high school, and college application deadlines were approaching quickly. I was recovering from a major illness at the time, and wasn’t ready to think about college. My plan was to spend a year living at home and working before I pursued higher education. In the following months, my recovery progressed rapidly.…

Stephen King, a talented horror fiction writer, published an article in Playboy magazine called “Why We Crave Horror Movies.” The author tries to prove modern day horror movies are a relief of violence and also can calm the negative nerves in the mind. In several ways these things can be related to real life situations. My relief of violence is dancing around in my room and reading my bible and horror movies allows us a chance to indulge in that sick imagination of ours so we do not act on them, as well as cage that “hungry” part in our brain.…

Much like James Stewart, my love of reading preceded my interest in writing. I would visit the library often growing up, checking out books in the mornings at the elementary school before the first bell rang or taking part in the public library’s reading program during the summer. When I had my tonsils removed in the fourth grade, my school librarian (who was all too familiar with me at this point) delivered me a stack of books at home, knowing I would get restless without reading material while I was recovering. Unlike Stewart, my love of writing followed soon after as a natural progression. My mother was a teacher at my elementary school, so I would often stay with her after the class ended, waiting for her to finish grading papers or write…

“With great power comes great responsibility”. This was said by someone who had a profound way with words, but I'm not sure exactly who it was, mainly because it has been said in every known origin story of a superhero I can think of, so I guess it's safe to say it is motivational. Imagine that you could have one super power. What would it be and how would you use it? What would be your kryptonite?…

Anyone can be a writer. The numbers that can actually be good writers, on the other hand, are much slimmer. On Writing, a memoir by the highly acclaimed Stephen King, gives its readers a glimpse into the author's private and professional life and just what exactly does it take to make it as a writer. Throughout the book, King constantly hammers in the fact that those who plan to write a novel in hopes of it becoming a bestseller, so that they may reap in the fame and fortune that follows it, should just stop writing then and there.…
