Gender Stereotypes In Sportscaster's Credibility

Superior Essays
For my study, I would like to examine how sportscaster’s credibility is perceived based on their gender and based on the specific sports they are covering. I plan to complete my study within one semester, starting in January and ending in May. Being that I am a student, I only have so many resources at my disposal in which to successfully conduct my study. My study is quantitative for the obvious reason that I have a hypothesis rather than a research question. But, I also chose quantitative because I feel that this type of study is based on the multiple individuals rather than a few individuals. I plan on finding out how and why people feel a certain way about sportscasters, whether that is negative or positive. I have chosen to conduct surveys …show more content…
For the most part, the age and gender of the average person will determine how they feel about sports in general and who they want covering their sports in the media. For example, a man of an older age would rather have a man reporter covering his football game because he grew up with this being the norm. But for a young female, she would rather see her favorite sport being covered by another female reporter because the norm now is adversity is a good thing. After the demographic questions, I will ask questions about how often the participant watches sports and how they feel about specific genders in regards to a specific sport. The participants will be asked to answer the questions using the Likert Scale, one being strongly disagree and five being strongly agree. For example, I will ask someone how he or she feels about a female sportscaster covering a basketball game. My participants will be asked to answer 12 questions all together. I do not want to ask more questions because as a student, I know that days are short and time is valuable. So I feel that if I make the number of questions low, I have a better chance of getting more people to …show more content…
In order to be sure that the questions I have made up are reliable, I will use Cronbach’s Alpha. I chose this reliability test because I want to be sure that my questions are all asking questions about the same content and none of them are deterring from the main concept of my study and that my questions are measuring the same thing. After I have determined the reliability test, I then need to confirm that my surveys have validity as well. For a validity test, I will use face validity. I am choosing to do face validity because I want to be sure that I am measuring what I am supposed to be measuring in my surveys. It is very common to defer from the main concept when surveying participants but the face validity test will make sure that doesn’t happen. When conducting a survey with real life participants, it is very important to maintain good ethical circumstances. To keep these circumstances during my study, I will first tell the students about the surveys before giving them out. I will tell the students that I am conducting surveys for a study and then I will let them fill it out. Following the survey, I will then tell the participant exactly what I am studying and why I am conducting the

One thing I would like to point out is that I’m not a big fan of baseball or sports in general. Which is weird because I actually liked this movie a lot on how these women went from housewives from cleaning to cooking to baseball. A sport where most would think the last place you would see a woman. In those days women were looked at as caretakers and would do what everything around the house. I’m not saying all of them did that, but at that time when their husbands went off to war to fight for their country baseball was dwindling.…

ARGUMENT 1: The male/female coverage of sports is not evenly distributed in the media. • Professional sports are a part of the entertainment industry, and thus, the spectators and supporters of the athletes mainly determine the quantity of pay. Men’s sports attract more spectators and attention, and are therefore able to sell more tickets to live events, thus generating more money. • More money is invested into commercials pertaining to male athletes. For instance, most TV commercials use the most popular male athletes.…

What are the stereotypes? “Hey Sami are you ready for some awesome roller coasters here at Six Flags?” Matt (trombone) says as I step off of the bus with my best friend Regan right on my heels. Before I am able to utter a syllable, Regan grabs my elbow and whispers, “Wait I thought we were going to ride everything in the park today.” Now granted I love my best friend, but she is not the best person to ride roller coasters with since she scares easily.…

It really started in 1958, with the scandalous diversion show outrages, in which government specialists uncovered that the fiercely famous NBC TV appear "Twenty-One" and "$64,000 Question" were fixed. That outrage prompted the examination of comparative practices in radio. On January 25, 1960 the National Association of Broadcasters suggested that radio plate racers tolerating installment from record marks for TV specific melodies would be charged a $500 fine and put in a year in jail. The practice, known as payola, had incited a broad examination by the National Association of Broadcasters. In this research project, I specifically ordered the questions to flow in a certain way. I start off with basic/starter questions, such as age, gender and race, to ease the person into the survey. Once a trust has been instilled, I then flow into more challenging and political questions. There is one, two-part contingency question regarding voting practices and who the participants voted for.…

The survey was medium-sized in length and had questions that ranged from very general to specific. The survey was distributed to an entry-level government class at a medium-sized public university in Maryland. The students in the class then asked their family members and other friends to take the survey. The variables that I used in my analysis were the gender and partisanship questions on the survey. These two questions relate to the concepts that I have discussed above in my theory section because they have directly target the relationship between gender and partisanship.…

All the way from pewee leagues to professional sports women are stereotyped by society. These stereotypes occur in many different ways, across a wide variety of sports. Between being valued on physical appearance of the body, and less on performance, gender stereotypes clearly exist in sports. In the article “Stereotype threat affects the learning of sport motor skills”, by Caroline Heidrich and Suzete Chiviacowsky, the authors explain that the purpose of their study was to discover if women in sports are effected in anyway by sterotypes. They gathered a group of 24 women and divided them into two groups.…

People make mistakes. It’s a natural part of life; none of us are perfect. However, if heard about a public figure making one, this philosophy no longer applies. We’ve all heard of those nights were a public figure/congressmen/ or celebrity forgot that they were married, and their mistress comes out to the public. And I’m even surer that soon after those same people have admitted to being a terrible person, publicly apologizes to their family and etc., and now is going to work on being a better person.…

'Gender bias in sports media coverage' Over the last one hundred years, the role of the woman in society has radically transformed. For many women, their role was to be a homemaker, nothing more. Women have fought hard to be accepted as equals on a basic level across a wide platform. Although things for women have improved discrepancies still exist especially in the area of sport. In sport, some of the most iconic victories have come from strong talented women, who not only face competition from their opponents, but struggle to be treated equally, and also encounter discrimination and sexism.…
