How Sports Have Changed My Life

Being a member of the St. Thomas Aquinas athletic program has been a transformational and memorable experience for me throughout my high school years. To say the least, joining the soccer team, basketball team, and track team my freshman year was one of the best decisions in my life. I have met some of my closest friends and became more comfortable and confident with myself both on and off the field, court, and track. Although my fellow teammates can be quite a handful at times, they are my extended family. No matter what team, we all encourage each other, cry together, and push each other to bring out the best in ourselves. We are a family and that’s one of the many reasons sports at St. Thomas Aquinas High School have changed my life.

Sports, in general, are geared toward winning, perfecting an athlete's physical ability and entertaining the spectators. Typically, everyone’s stereotype of a sports team is they work nonstop, constantly exerting energy to improve their skills and although this is true, they often overlook the personal aspect of team bonding. Thomas Aquinas athletics have taught me to have confidence in myself, never to worry when trying new things, to always think positive in any situation, and to never underestimate my own abilities. Although soccer and basketball are team sports, I have learned to compete against myself in hope to improve with each game I play. I just want to bring perspective to why I decided to form a team, and why it has been so successful for me and my teammates. In this sport, unless you have lived it yourself, no one else can ever truly appreciate the lows and highs, the sacrifices, the mood swings, the doubts , the fears, the anxiety, the pleasure, the intensity, and the list go on, of what we as competitors go through in preparation for the “big day”! We are in an elite group of people that most do not, and cannot, understand. So, to have a team of girls that truly “get it”, is something that I have grown to love and cherish. It is a sisterhood that supports each other and lift each other up.…

People play for a variety of reasons in individual or team sports. The driving force that keeps them playing generally establishes the level of achievement. Throughout my four years of high school, the seaside community of Narragansett, Rhode Island, has encouraged and nurtured the growth of its youthful inhabitants as students and individuals. The supportive environment and abundant opportunities available for students to pursue their passions and help others consequently benefits the community as a whole. As an athlete, and more specifically, a runner, I have aspired to motivate and encourage young athletes to enjoy the fun and friendships that emerge from being a part of a sports team. During the summer, I volunteered at the Summer Youth Track Series at Narragansett High School. Eager smiles painted the faces of the joyous young runners lining up in heats, ready to run as fast as they can in the 100 meter sprint, throw as far as they can in the turbo javelin, and jump as far as they can in the long jump.…

As I looked through the old videotapes on my shelf, my eyes fixated on one tape that wasn’t labeled like the rest of them were. I pulled it off the shelf, popped it in the tape player, and leaned back on my couch. Play. The tape started off with younger me running around a grass field attempting to kick a soccer ball further than a couple of inches. Every time the ball left my feet, my eyes would light up and a small laugh would escape my mouth.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

Many kids around the world have trouble finding friends and that can become an issue for them in the future. Sports are a great way to build or create friendships because kids are introduced to new skills and can learn together. Also, being in a team with other people can show kids the value of working with their peers and often results in friendship.
