How Sorority Has Changed My Life

Joining a sorority has been one of my dreams ever since I was a little girl. Growing up with an older sister who was in a sorority at Western Illinois University, I was taught everything I needed to know. Upon coming to University of Nebraska-Lincoln, I formally rushed and joined Phi Mu in fall 2013. We are a group of friendly, responsible, smart and diverse young woman. The definition of sorority, found on dictionary.com, states that a sorority is: “a society or a club of women or girls, especially in college.” To me, however, a sorority is much more than just a society or club. It gives you the ability to meet friends that you will have the opportunity to know the rest of your life. Becoming a member of Phi Mu has helped me grow in more ways than I had ever imagined and has helped me experience so many new aspects of everyday life. Upon joining a sorority, you instantly obtain the opportunity to gain new skills, ideas, and confidence that may have been uneasily obtainable otherwise. Growing up, I achieved a vast amount of knowledge of being in a sorority and participating in Greek life from both my Mother and Sister. Some girls aren’t given the advantage of learning what a sorority is like first hand like I was. You can, however, easily find more information about sororities on the Internet, television shows, and movies. After research on the Internet, you will find articles about several sororities raising money for the “Make-A-Wish” foundation, or simply helping out in the community. Without much knowledge on the subject, and by simply relying on predictable nightly news, you may only see the story of a sorority getting kicked off campus because of a racial caption on a picture that went viral.
