How Sociopaths Brain Works

Improved Essays
My final paper is going to be about how sociopaths brain works, also the procedure of diagnosing someone as a sociopath. Some people think that sociopaths are crazy or can hide emotions well. These are all stereotypical ideas of what a sociopath is, but we can't really predict if someone is a sociopath by just talking to them. The correct definition of a sociopath is a person with a personality manifesting itself in extreme antisocial, or not wanting the company of others, attitudes, behavior, and lack of conscience. They have different personalities ,such as being very charismatic to others and most importantly, they do not feel remorse. These characteristics of a sociopath could easily be mistaken for a regular person because in a normal …show more content…
This an important emotion for a normal development and scientist have little understanding of how this happens. According to Harma Meffert, a post-doctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Mental Health in Bethesda, she did a series of test to see if sociopaths really lack empathy. For instance, there were 26 participants that are classified as Sociopaths, or Psychopaths, they were shown a movie of people interacting with others by their hands (violently, affectionately, and rejection) while their brain activity was being measured. During the second stage, they were asked to really pay attention to a character so they could really feel their emotions. Final stage they went through each interaction as shown in the movie, like being slapped on the hand. This activated their somatosensory cortex, which is the region in the brain involving sensing …show more content…
James Fallon , a neuroscientist, was always fascinated with the brain. He studied the biological basis for behavior, and one of his specialties was to try and figure out how a killer's brain is different from yours and mine. Fallon made a surprising discovery about four years ago while talking to his grandmother. He did some research and found out that his ancestor was hanged for killing his mother in 1667 and that there were many more executions in his family for murder, like Lizzie Borden who murdered her father and stepmother with an Axe in 1882. Fallon looked at a picture of a non normal brain where there were yellow and red patches (which symbolizes that the brain is active in those parts of the brain) everywhere except the orbital cortex or the section between the eyes. This is thought to be only in sociopaths. To properly diagnose the disorder, they take an PET and they let them watch a series of movies and if the orbital cortex is blank then they are classified as a

The short film Breathe directed by Toby Meakins depicts two men conjuring a ghost by holding their breath, the longer they hold their breath the more she does. The one man who had obviously done the interaction before then suffocates the man that he introduces to the supernatural girl. I believe that he does this because he classifies as a person with antisocial personality disorder. I think this because he shows a lot of indicators that would classify him as a psychopath or a sociopath. There are slight distinctions between psychopaths and sociopaths although they do share multiple personality traits including a disregard for laws and social morals, disregard for the rights of others, a failure to feel remorse or guilt, and a tendency…

`Psychopathic personality' was once widely used but was superseded by `sociopathic personality' to indicate the social aspects of the disorder, but now `antisocial personality disorder' is the preferred term. The term psychopath is commonly used incorrectly in the media to describe someone who has done something considered “evil.” Terrorists, mass killers and bombers often get labeled with this term before anyone has caught them, let alone had time to make an assessment of them. It’s become shorthand for people who do terrible things, and that disconnect from the reality of the situation is a problem in the way we view people and their actions. By labeling someone a psychopath, it’s easy to write them off as evil and never look at the actual factors that go into their actions.…

The article “Confessions of a Sociopath” illustrates M.E. Thomas’s frustration with the stigma attached to sociopaths. The media’s perception of sociopaths is that they are all the same crazed serial killers hell bent on killing people, which in reality isn’t near the truth. The truth of sociopaths is that they are people that show no remorse and use deception often, as well as they ignore social cues, all of which aren’t necessarily bad, but the average sociopath isn’t a killer. Most sociopaths are very enjoyable people and can form relationships with others like anyone else can, People also misinterpret how sociopathy forms. Many believe that it is a result of a child being mistreated and having a rough experience growing up…

Also, a sociopath may base his feelings on “the reactions of others to decide what feelings to display, because otherwise he would not know what is appropriate” (“Antisocial Personality-Part I”). In order to resolve issues dealing with emotions, sociopaths must work them out in a way unlike normal people. Normal people respond to emotional issues quickly while sociopaths address these issues in steps (Stout…

Martha Stout would describe a sociopath as someone who has no empathy for another person, has no conscience, and does not feel guilt. In other words they lack moral reasoning, “Moral reasoning is the thought process that attends conscience and helps it decide what to do” (Stout, p.171). In the model for morality and moral development, made by Lawrence Kohlberg, these individual would belong to Level 1, that’s when moral issues are approached from the perspective of self-interest Sociopaths are commonly known to be criminals or have criminal characteristics, which isn't always the case, but can also be described as ethical egoism, which states, “we should act from self-interest—that our motivation for moral behavior should be our own rationally derived interests” (Williams & Arrigo, p.103). In this reading I would argue…

Another more in depth research that had been done by Dr. Adrian Raine that had been studying at the University of Pennsylvania. His studies had been done from the late 1980s, Raine had been analyzing the brains of convicted killers and murders that were psychopaths and the signs that they show, Raine had conducted a PET scan on 41 convicted killers and also done the scan on a group of normal people. The results of the test showed that the area of the brain that controlled impulses had been significantly different between the two groups. Also in later research Raine had discovered that the part of a criminal’s brain that controls emotion was usually overactive. This meant that these criminals were likely to be more emotional than the group of normal people.…

The most incredible characteristic of a sociopath is their complete absence of empathy, lack of conscience, remorse, guilt or shame. Sociopaths are like chameleons, they can easily depict real remorse but the picture they show outside has little similarity to the reality that is going on behind the screen, their reality is well hidden, and only known by the sociopaths themselves. “Depending on the authorities quoted, sociopaths may constitute up to 35 percent of the prison population and are responsible for as much as 80 to 90 percent of all crimes” ("NCJRS Abstract - National Criminal Justice Reference Service"). Consequently, for these people who do not give a care what others think of them, just a simple public shaming may not be a complete…

Also, in a past chapter in our text, I was so astonished by the undergoing research on Autistic children and how emotions displayed on cartoon trains has allowed for these children to recognize emotions, which leads me to believe that anything is possible with extensive research and adequate techniques. These qualities, I believe are important qualities to possess as they allow us to develop and maintain relationships and even to increase our success in other areas like the workplace. I can’t help but to relate the topic of emotional intelligence to sociopaths, one usually relates negative stigmas to this personality disorder, but in actuality there are plenty of diagnosed sociopaths who lead “normal” lives. One example is M.E. Thomas, diagnosed sociopath and author of “Confessions of a Sociopath: A Life Spent Hiding in Plain Sight.” One characteristic of a sociopath is the lack of empathy and the inability to “feel” emotions.…

Understanding how human behavior is linked to ¬¬¬different disorders is essential while striving to comprehend crime and its causes. Many professionals often assume psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder are identical, and interchangeably utilize the two terms. Upon further investigation and research, both have been proven to be in fact different, and entail different elements. Psychopathy is a bundle of socially deviant behaviors and personality traits; antisocial personality disorder, on the other hand, is composed of both criminal and antisocial behavior. According to Hare’s article, Psychopathy and Antisocial Personality Disorder: A Case of Diagnostic Confusion, most psychopaths meet the criteria for antisocial personality disorder, but…

Psychopaths are also highly manipulative and will not feel guilty when they use others to achieve their goals. They learn at an early age to conceal these motivations and become skilled at the art of conning others for their own benefit. The difference between a psychopath and a sociopath, terms that some use synonymously, is that while a sociopath will not hide their indifference to others’ feelings, psychopaths use emotional masks, charm, and deliberate planning to get their way. The sociopath’s antisocial disorder plays havoc with all of those who surround them while controlling his or her own life choices. The varying degrees of their behavior determine how well they blend into society. Though some are, the vast majority of sociopaths aren 't killers lurking in the shadows. Most of them are walking around among us, immersed in careers that benefit from their characteristics. Corporate leadership requires a temperament that craves power, autonomy, commanding control, and status.…
