It’s our instinct when we see someone who looks like a potential danger to our safety, to attempt to stay away. There are people online that are like this too. These people have full access to our lives through social media and we may not even know they exist. These people could be enemies, stalkers or even rapists. It is easy to create a false identity and anyone can see what you’ve posted. While we’re young and still developing, we don’t understand the absence of online privacy. O’Keeffe in, “The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents, and families”, discuss some risks teens and children have concerning social media. She states that a couple main risk to adolescents online today are lack of privacy, and sharing too much information about themselves or others (O’Keeffe, 638). She was extremely thrilled about the outing and got caught up in all the fun and excitement. A couple days before our trip, she posted on Facebook, “Preparing for my trip has me so excited! I’m looking forward to an amazing week spent lake side with my fantastic family! I’ll make sure to post pictures!”. After our trip, we came home to many things missing from our house. Some of our electronics, appliances, and jewelry had been stolen. My parents were devastated. We never found the thief, but assumed that they must have planned the theft when they saw my mom’s post on Facebook before our trip. This brought into focus a lot of online awareness issues our family had. We started to closely monitor our online profiles and educate ourselves about what was okay to post and what was not.
