Think about how many times you’ve heard about something on social media how fast you jumped to the conclusion of something you had minimal information on. Social media has become the main source of information for many people around the world. According to a study conducted by the Pew research center in association with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation showed that 63% of people use Twitter and Facebook as their source of information. This is causing us to form biased opinions on topics we never care to research. An article “The final tally of the damage done in ferguson riots” by Patrick Howell O’nell showed all the damage caused by the riots. There were hundreds of shots fired, 13 injuries, 80 arrests, 25 burned down businesses, 12 civilian cars destroyed in one parking lot, 2 police cruisers burned down, 1 death and 3.5 million tweets responding to the event as it was happening. The truth is, while racial tension was a major contributing factor to the riots, it wasn’t the only cause. However, little press coverage mentioned these underlying causes. In fact, quite the opposite was true. Ferguson did cause a setback in the civil rights movement for blacks; however, it really helped them in the long run with the amount of events it caused in its future. Elite white males and upper class individuals were the main reason for the original setbacks in African American development. The discrimination and constant segregation in public and educational settings didn’t allow any growth for the culture. White Americans were blinded by power and control. If African Americans had the same educational and occupational opportunities as whites did from the get-go, they probably wouldn’t have been looked down upon as much since they would have similar intelligence levels.…

In response to the deaths of Mike Brown (27 August 2014) and Ferguson (09 August 2014), many protests emerged throughout the nation. “The police response to the uprising was intended to repress and punish the population, who had dared to defy their authority” (155). Due to that focus, the law enforcement practices in Ferguson were compromised. It was the need to generate revenue that contributed to unconstitutional policing and a lot of racial bias within the legal system in Ferguson. The racial bias caused a vast mistrust between the African American community in Ferguson and law enforcement in Ferguson. It all seems to be a domino effect that continues to become worse as it goes along. Racial bias within Ferguson affects almost every single citizen that lives within…
