Social Media Effects Where is your phone right now? For many millennials our phones are our lifeline to the outside world, and our phones are right next to us. Countless Americans use their cell phones every day to communicate, form relationships, and engage with people socially. This includes popular social networking apps such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Snapchat. Since our phones are attached to us, we often ignore the negative impacts of social media. Our fingers control our phones which apps we use and which filters we abuse. With every press, swipe, or touch of our fingers, our emotions quickly change. We might laugh at cat video, learn of a friend’s marriage engagement, or discover the latest celebrity death all on one Facebook …show more content…
Bullying is easier to do behind a computer screen because you do not see the reaction that he or she is having. Cyberbullying can be anything from a nasty email to direct threats. We may see someone being bullied on a social media site but we may not want to do anything about this or we may not exactly know what to do. In the article 10 Reasons Social Media Affects Mental Health, I found that “an organization called Enough is Enough, conducted a survey that found 95% of teenagers that use social media have witnessed cyberbullying, and 33% have been victims themselves.” When we are scrolling through news feeds on social media and come across something that is hurtful it tends to mess with our emotions and make us feel sad. The post can make us happy, laugh, or it can make us sad. Cyberbullying can also lead to depression. Stephanie Pappas once stated in an article called Cyberbullying on Social Media Linked to Teen Depression and in that article Pappas stated that, “cyberbullying on social media is linked to depression in teenagers, according to new research that analyzed multiple studies of the online phenomenon.” We may come across a tweet on Twitter or an Instagram and suddenly want to know who or what the post was
