Various studies have been conducted on numerous accounts to focus on the relationships between a child’s social status and educational success, as well as one’s lifestyle at home. Though many children come from different home backgrounds, the child depends on the attitudes of their parents before coming to school and their educational background knowledge also, rather than just their social ranking in society. This paper examines the work of Lareau (2000) and the research conducted along with other’s works to better understand how social inequality affects a child’s educational career. According to Kimberly Moffitt, social inequality is defined as “the existence of unequal opportunities and rewards for different social positions/statuses within a group or society.” With this in mind, it can be said that a child’s education could be compromised due to the lack of opportunities available as a result of their social …show more content…
As stated in her article, “An insistence on high school graduation and a tentative interest in having their children attend college was typical of Colton mothers’ and fathers’ educational aspirations for their children,” which portrays the high school diploma is important, and it would be a good idea for them to continue on to college. However, in contrast, Prescott parents answered their expectations of their children were to attend college, no matter what. They valued the educational career and for their children to strive and push themselves through school rather than stopping at high school.
Parental involvement plays a significant role in the education of children as well. In the study done by Purcell-Gates (2008) there is evidence that although parents may not be educated, it does not mean they are not involved in their child’s educational career. For example, in
