How does social class impact on education? Explore with reference to course reading.

Social Class can be defined as ‘a broad group in society having common economic, cultural, or political status.’ (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/social+class)In the past social class was much more defined and was based on your economic stability and your ownership of valuables such as a house or car etc. It is highly believed that your social affected your occupation for example being a lawyer or doctor for example are thought to be higher class jobs in comparison to a cleaner. Those who are brought up from a higher class household are also likely to be educated in a private or boarding school. Cultures between classes may also differ as the values and expectations of each other may vary.

Cyril Lodowic Burt was a British educational psychologist and was asking question on whether intelligence was based on biology and genetics and in particularly the heritability of intelligence this the similarity of a person’s IQ in comparison to someone they are related to and in particularly Burt focused on twins this became known as ‘The Burt Affair’. The 1944 Butler Education Act was an attempt by conservative government to remove inequalities within the education system. Secondary education was now free of charge for all pupils with a number of free spaces at grammar schools.
