There is no doubt that smartphones have changed the way we live our daily lives, but is it really for the best? If you’re like me and just about everyone else on this planet you probably have a smartphone or at least know what they do. Dictionary.com defines a smartphone as “a device that combines a cell phone with a hand-held computer with internet access”. (“Smartphone”). Growing up in the smartphone era I have been exposed to all the hype and excitement that people express for their smartphones, almost treating them as if they were family. I on the other hand have never paid much attention to smartphones and never saw the need for one, but peer pressure prevailed and I recently bought one. I got a smartphone because I thought it would help me stay connected to my friends and help me stay organized, but that was the complete opposite of what happened. With my smartphone I find myself sitting in class looking at Facebook or Twitter instead of taking notes, which has been taking a toll on my grades. I also thought smartphones would help me become more social, and stay connected to my friends easier, but every time I’m with my friends they tend to look at their screens and not at each other. We are all guilty of looking at our smartphones when we should be paying attention, but the worst part about the smartphone generation is that we treat a text message more important than a life, and we treat our cell phones better than we treat our friends.
