How Skin-To-Skin Affects Mother And Baby

Improved Essays
Prior and during my clinical experience, I had some free time to go and read up on some EBP. One article that I came across was about how skin-to-skin can affect both mother and baby. The research article stated many points that I was so excited to share with my patient. I had learned a lot of these points from past lectures, but it was awesome to see it in writing. I learned that skin-to-skin from a mothers standpoint is reassuring. The mother feels her baby’s skin next to hers and it actually calms her down. The article also stated that using skin-to-skin increases the temperatures of both bodies. As for the baby, the feeling and smells that are picked up from the mother are naturally soothing and the baby feels “secure”. The article also stated that it is proven to help …show more content…
As the conversation flowed, I asked the mother if she knew what that was called. She told me it was called skin-to-skin and that she had been reading throughout pregnancy about how it can help both mother and baby. The mother was very pleased and seemed overjoyed that I was asking her about this topic. I asked the mother about her first pregnancy and asked if she used skin-to-skin. The mother stated she did not use skin-to-skin and in fact had a very undesirable experience breastfeeding. As I was listening, the baby latched onto the mother’s nipple naturally. The mother stated that she has been experiencing such an opposite experience with this newborn. The mother’s temperature actually raised every time she had been skin-to-skin with the baby. When the baby had been skin-to-skin with her, the mother’s temperature was around 100 degrees Fahrenheit, but when the baby was in dad’s arms, the mother temperature was around 97 degrees Fahrenheit. The mother was very pleased with the results that already showed. She stated that it was reassuring for me to talk about it with her more because she wanted to hear feedback from a medical

The controversial topics of swaddling and co-sleeping peaked my interest because I had heard about both parenting methods when trying to get a newborn to sleep but never knew if the methods were safe or not. While gaining observation hours for my Pre-Occupational Therapy major, I observed an occupational therapist swaddle premature babies in the hospital. The occupational therapist said that the technique stimulated the idea that the infant was back inside his or her mother’s womb. As a result of seeing how occupational therapists use the swaddling method to help calm the infant, I was intrigued to find out more about the advantages and disadvantages of swaddling an infant. Additionally, I chose both topics to discover the controversial…

When a baby is born prematurely, the baby is not finished developing, which result in complications when they are born. When infants are born prematurely, born three weeks or more before full term, or have a low birth rate, they have to reside in the NICU for as long as possible, so they can be under watch. The prenatal environment and the NICU are very different for the infant. The NICU has bright lights, loud noises from screaming babies, nurses, and machines, which can also have an effect of the baby’s brain development. Because the infants are not accommodated to their senses being aroused, they can become over-stimulated.…

He will not take any bottles, no matter who is feeding him. Even when the bottle contains his mother’s breastmilk, her son will not drink it. The “expert” who is responding to this mother’s post suggests that this is because the baby is in a stage of attachment to his mother, and that the mother should try her best to not separate from her son unless she absolutely needs to.…

Introduction Throughout the human evolution, human development during infancy has clearly shown the need for parental supervision. Unlike some animals which can self-sufficient themselves from an early age, a human infant cannot survive on its own once it is out in the world. They require care and supervision to an extend time until they are ready to self-sufficient on its own. From the beginning of the human existence, mothers and infants shared a close physical contact, even during their sleep. The mother would provide warmth, nutrition, and protection to the infant for their essential survival.…

During my maternity clinical experience I was able to be a part of the discussion encouraging mothers to breast feed their infants almost weekly. Before attending nursing school I had a limited understanding concerning breast feeding, but I had heard and learned that the benefits of breast feeding far outweigh any other source of infant nutrition. During this course and several other courses in the nursing program, the professors and guest lectures have all emphasized the vast physiological and emotional benefits that stem from breast feeding. I have decided to discuss the benefits of breastfeeding for the critical analysis paper because during my clinical rotations on the floor I noticed that breast feeding is always one of the main focal…
