How Servic Service Changed My Life

The next morning, I saw the newspaper while I was eating breakfast. On the front page, there was a story about a young boy who saved a woman’s life. She was going to walk into her house and end herself, but he smiled and waved at her from across the street. He ran over to her and asked her how her day was, in a completely mundane conversation, which led to her talking to him for hours. His mere existence on that day and in that place changed her whole perspective, resulting in her deciding to spare her life for the hope that she could help others like her. That boy reminded me of my mother, who came in at the right moment to spare me making the worst mistake a person could make. In that moment, I knew what my life was meant for: being there for others. …show more content…
I volunteered around my school and community in whatever ways I could, being someone who was present in other people’s lives. I joined National Junior Honor Society, formally pledging myself to the cause of serving those around me. In high school, I participated in National Honor Society as an active member, completing over one hundred hours of service engagement over the course of those four years. While money was never exchanged, I was rewarded for my dedication to service in ways that can never be repaid. Helping people, existing for the sole purpose of being a present force in others’ lives, has given me a reason to excel in my own life. If I have positively impacted one person, then I have completed my mission. If I have given others hope, then that is more than I could ever dream

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

Teddy Roosevelt once said that nothing worth having comes easy. With this in mind, I have actively spent my high school years working to ensure that my success and achievements are fruits of hard work and perseverance, rather than sheer luck. These past four years, I have dedicated my young mind to absorbing the valuable knowledge that pools before me in my rigorous AP courses. In addition, I also invested a good portion of my time into my school’s band program. Although balancing academics and such a demanding extracurricular activity was difficult, I managed to find the time to also participate in very rewarding organizations such as National Honor Society, among others.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…
