Scientific Pragmatism And Religion

Science is in everything, including religion and lack thereof. In this paper I will show how scientism is tied in with the aspects of religious faith and atheism. First and foremost science is defined as the analytical and empirical basis for understanding reality, truth is either analytically understood or empirically verifiable. Also the main arguments that will be discussed deal with the finely tuned universe, the teleological argument, the theory of pragmatism and biological evolution.
Scientism helps support atheism in the sense that with what I said earlier, science deals with analytical and synthetic statements. Truth is equated with a positivist understanding. Religious references to God can neither be considered true or false, since

Pragmatism discards the idea that the teleos of thought is to define, embody, or reflect reality. Instead, pragmatists consider thought an instrument for prediction, problem solving and action. William James says that truth happens to an idea in science when three things occur: when theories or laws provide a more intelligible answer; when it leads to pragmatic ends and when it facilitates scientific conversation. But the thing is, we don’t have this objective knowledge. Because of this we cannot follow the scientific positivist view of …show more content…
Scientific cosmology has in turn influenced theology. Many arguments related to science and religion have relatively the same premises, such as the Big Bang Theory and the creation story. These two stories sound quite similar. In the creation story God created the universe in one swift “let there be light” and according to the big bang it is said there was a burst of light coming from dark matter and everything appeared as it is. This is just one example of the many similarities between these two stories and stories in both science and religion. One nice point Anthony Flew points out in his book is the ideas of Max Planck. Max believed that “both science and religion are fighting a joint battle, a crusade against skepticism and against dogmatism, against unbelief and superstition.” Basically what he is trying to say is that both science and religious faith are going about the same way in what their main purposes are. They are both trying to get rid of disbelief and arrogance and for people to open their minds. Science must root itself in faith that the universe is a rationally methodical entirety of things. This is the implicit faith that the universe is rational and the mind can understand this rational universe. The connection of religion and science is that religion provides confirmation that the world is intelligible. Religion uses science as a way to confirm the ultimate meaning for the universe through

In modern times religion and science are increasingly becoming viewed as incompatible, or at least non-overlapping. Damien Keown states that “Scientific discoveries, and theories such as evolution, have challenged many traditional Christian teachings…” at the expense of making them appear “...dogmatic, irrational, and backward-looking” (119). Despite its brief history in the West, Buddhism has gained increasing popularity in part due to its frequent portrayal as an exception to the conflict between scientific and spiritual thought. Proponents of this view—deemed “Buddhist Modernists” or “Secular Buddhists”—argue that Buddhism possesses certain qualities which make it compatible with a secular view of the world, while providing a source of purpose…

“Science and religion are two powerful forces in modern society,” Phillips said, “so we should take the time to understand their relationship.” As both a person of faith and a renowned physicist, Phillips shared his unique perspective and position to address this relationship, believing science and religion ask different questions but aren’t fundamentally opposed as so many seem to believe. “Being an ordinary scientist,” Phillips explained, “and an ordinary Christian seems perfectly natural to…

Through his introduction, he manifests that the relation between religion and science are two great cultural forces that build and organize every aspect of human life. In addition, he affirms that this chapter will help us to think systematically, and intelligently about the relationship between these two great cultural forces, but also, we will not solve them because the issues involved in them are many and convoluted. In fact, Stratton says that the philosophical commitments inserted into science establish a lot of unnecessary controversies of religion and…

In his book titled Scholastic Metaphysics: A Contemporary Introduction, Edward Feser includes a 20-page overview of the four main points of his argument against scientism. He confidently claims that although many philosophers stray away from the dated ideas of metaphysics to the more contemporary scientism, there are no strong arguments for scientism. Feser’s four arguments against scientism are as follows. His first point is that scientism cannot achieve its intended result unless it becomes trivial. He then claims that there is no way that science, or even the scientific method, could provide an accurate description or explanation of all the phenomenons of reality.…

The article published by Jerry Coyne, titled, Science and Religion Aren’t Friends, is one that demands that science and religion are incompatible, and he makes an attempt to destroy any possibility of compatibility between the two. He claims that religion is merely a fog of superstition that needs to get out of the way of scientific progress. “ And any progress- not just scientific progress- is easier when we’re not yoked to religious dogma.” Coyne argues for the value of science, a value that doesn’t have various religions arguing with one another about which one is right, there is simply one scientific truth. “In contrast, scientists don’t kill each other over matters such as continental drift.…

THE MYSTERY OF CREATION VERSUS EVOLUTION The birth of the universe has been a discussion of Religion and Science. There is, or rather seems to be a stalking difference between the two. Creation is, without a cast of doubt the most profound mystery in the cosmos. The greatest puzzle of all times is whether the universe came into being by some freak random chance or was it created by God who brought everything to being by a perfect design. Scientific evidences found in recent times show that four key forces that govern our universe are phenomenally tuned up so firmly that it's made many to arrive at the conclusion that something or somebody must have calibrated them.…

For centuries, religion has been a topic of great debate and interest, stemming from the validity of ideals to reasons why people believe in it in the first place. Despite all the efforts over time to thwart religion, it has managed to remain as a prominent structure. One question that seems to always be brought to the table is how religion continues to exist in light of the continual advances of science. The reason religion continues to exist today is not because the furthering of science leads to disproving religion, but rather because religion addresses questions that currently not even the advances of science can answer, giving people a sense of unity and congregation based upon two key emotions: hope and fear.…

231 If Darwin thinks that species are weeded out through the process of natural selection, this would appear to negate what Paley believes, which is an intelligent Creator. Darwin preserves the ideologies put forth by Paley, in which a successor will not possess qualities, which are harmful to its creator or “possessor” as Darwin calls it. The possibility for Darwin’s theory to preserve any of Paley’s argument, involves seeing natural selection as part of a perfect design, with a creator who understands the designs, wherein some species are weaker than others, but not with the intention to do harm to other species.…

Goodman, “The difference in focus between science and religion lies partly in the fact that our natural sciences seek causal understanding about the world we see and touch and the things in it that we can gauge and measure, and tease out from one another, not just conceptually but experientially, things that we can reliably relate to one another—ideally, by type, and mathematically. ”9 Equally important, Christianity is a religion that opens the door for man to have a relationship with the ultimate authority,…

Science is able to explain these ‘supernatural forces’ with proof and evidence. Science and religion have always been at war. (Mastin, 2008) Despite the lack of scientific methods and factual basis, it was still deemed as scientifically friendly. Eventually, a transition occurred where analytical philosophy was based out of metaphysical schools. This development allowed for a closer connection between science and religion leading to its rise, as well as the field of philosophy of religion. (Fehige, "Contributions of Philosophy") Through the field of philosophy and religion, science could begin to appear in academic articles in conjunction with topics like creationism. Although the philosophy of religion helped lead to the development of the field, it did not lack its controversies.…

It could also be said that the Pragmatic theory itself is contradictory as some beliefs must correspond to a reality, thus causing it to validate the Correspondence Theory of Truth which was criticized by the early pragmatist. It was also not addressed that it we can never say an idea is true or false, because we cannot know all of the possible long term consequences of a belief.
