When it comes to religious beliefs, the human experience aspect plays a very important role. Although there are other forms of influence when choosing or learning about a religion, in my opinion the human experience plays the most vital role. Whether your religion is passed down to you through your family or you make your own individual of which religion you would like to pursue, it is inevitable to have your outlook swayed (even in the slightest). I was born into a family of Christians. However as I grow older meet more people of other religions the things I practiced and the way that I practice them have changed.…

Clothes, food, music, and religion are all the things i associate with culture. I wore the hijab at age 13 and since then, it has shaped my values and beliefs. Some just see it as a piece of fabric around my head, but i see it as a reflection of all the things i was taught growing up.…

Around the world, Muslims are perceived as dangerous. At airports we are “randomly” selected,we are labeled as terrorists all over the media, and we cannot make a simple invention without being wrongfully accused. Everything was represented as it is due to the horrifying world event, 9/11. The effects of 9/11, the significant fueled incident that occurred at a high school, and the rise of social media may not have directly influenced my life, but the influence of these events will always play a role in my future.…

As an African-American woman, my beliefs are often times shaped by my personal experiences. Having endured prejudices and discrimination in all aspects of life, I have found that all of my beliefs stem from one core belief; equitable opportunities for all. This core belief is imbedded in my belief that all people should have impartial education, healthcare, assistance, and job opportunities. While different in scope, these fields provide the opportunity for development assistance for everyone who takes advantage of them. For this reason, I believe that my efforts will be best used in the public sector.…

I don’t choose to blame anyone who thinks of the hijab in a negative way, but stop letting the media influence your thoughts. The information is out there learn more, read more, or even talk to a Muslim woman. The hijab is much deeper than a piece of cloth and the negative stereotypes associated with wearing it. A “simple piece of cloth” I wear to preserve my modesty but it’s much more than that. I can define who I am by wearing…

If somebody Googles “beautiful woman”, they can go through the first 100 results and not see a single woman wearing a hijab, the headscarf worn by many Muslim women internationally. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and a total of 2 women wearing a headscarf can be shown. This probably doesn’t surprise many people; Partly because many people know how the media portrays Muslim women, and partly because there are many people who don’t think that Muslim women can be beautiful and wouldn’t consider any for their list. Criticism of Muslim women is widely practiced and has consequently become widely-accepted. Muslim women are constantly being dehumanized by the media, other people, and the negative stereotypes that surround their…

The media portrays me as a terrorist. After 9/11, being Muslim in America meant that you had to live in fear, conceal your faith, or pay the price of retaliation by someone who reacted out of ignorance. It meant you had to constantly apologize for acts of terrorism committed by criminals that use Islam as a banner to progress their vendettas. However, being Muslim also meant that you could learn self-disciple through the five-daily prayers, patience, and tolerance as I tried to understand the reasons why so many Americans feared Muslims. Unfortunately, I did not see the benefit of expressing my faith until I was much older.…

I believe that my beliefs have come from many things that have happened to me throughout my life. My family, and the way I raised impacted my beliefs. I also believe that they come from my education that I have got such as my public-school education, and my church school schooling. Everything I have been through also impacts my beliefs, but ultimately it is up to me to decide what I believe in, and or choose not to believe in anymore. I used to believe that love didn’t exist in our society anymore due to people saying it to people they dated for after one week, and then breaking up and telling the new girlfriend I love you fast as well.…

The faith that has most influenced my life was accepting who I am. I was born to Vietnamese parents; however, I did not believe myself as Vietnamese. I always pretended to be Japanese because I did not want to be different from my Japanese friends. I learned Vietnamese from my father since I was a child, and my parents always communicate with me in Vietnamese. Literally, I did not prefer to speak in Vietnamese, especially in public, because I cared about what others think of my family.…

Your personal orientation of religion can also be shaped by one of the three perspectives of religion: functional, belief, and materialist. I would say that I am a mixture of both the functional and the belief perspective. The functional perspective says that religion is useful, and that it is found everywhere because it is useful both for society and for individuals. Religion does things for us, such as helping define ourselves and making the world and life more understandable according to us. From another point of view, the belief perspective says that ultimate reality exists, and it cannot be perceived.…
