How Reading Has Impacted My Life

A Reconciled Love Just like most kids my story of how reading has impacted my life started when I was very young. A memory of my childhood was my parents laying my sister Ashley and I down every night to read us a bible story. I was always an adventurous kid, so for me story time was just another adventure. I have always enjoyed reading like my mom; however, I would prefer to be outside with a ball in my hand like my dad. Regardless of how hard I resisted, my mom would insist that I come inside to practice flashcards, sound out the whole alphabet, or work on phonics. My mom, being the teacher that she is, would bring loads of “teacher stuff” home for me to work on; that is if she could get me to sit still long enough. When I began school mom started to worry because I was struggling more than the average student with reading and spelling. Eventually we …show more content…
Reading was always enjoyable to me but it was the last thing on my mind. My mom would take me to the library and let me check out books hoping her love for reading would rub off on me. She is the one person who has impacted my reading career the most. I am thankful that I have always had the influence of a strong reader in my life. Even though I don’t always choose to spend my time reading, I do understand the importance of being a good reader in relation to being successful. Living such a busy life it is often hard to find free time to read for entertainment. If I do have time to read it is the Bible or for a school assignment. I really regret that my reading journey has almost come to a halt in the past couple of years. I am waiting for something to rekindle my fire for reading. In the words of Dr. Suess, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” I sincerely hope that my love for reading continues to grow as I become an adult because I will always love a good

My family wasn’t around a lot when I was younger. My mom and dad both worked full time jobs, and the age gap between my sisters and I made it hard for us to enjoy spending time together. I’ve always felt that the big age gap between me and everyone in my family always affected our closeness. They all seemed so grown up, understanding things that I had yet to grasp, and doing things that I wasn't able to do. I longed to be able to be as grown up as the rest of my family.…

I always read as a kid. I was the small boy who plowed through books day and night, my mom scrambling to and from the library just to keep up with me. My mother has been my literary sponsor throughout my life. I remember the times my mom would make me read books and later on have me write and summarize the book. She would also make me notecards of tough vocabulary words and have me memorize and spell each word. She helped me learn many aspects of literacy such as vocabulary, spelling, grammar and much more. As Erika J. Petersen explains in her article, Past Experiences and Future Attitudes in Literacy, “… It 's apparent that past experiences with learning literacy appeared to play a role in these people’s future attitudes toward reading and writing and that praise continues to change your attitudes throughout your entire learning experience” (Petersen 197).…

Because of this, reading with my mother turned into the most frustrating, yet satisfying learning experience of my early childhood. I would gleefully sit beside my mother on the couch, hand her my favorite book, and beg, “Just another chapter, please!” And, as a loving and encouraging parent, she would happily oblige and fulfill my wish. Attentively listening, my eyes would follow her finger, hoping that something would click in my head. As we read, she would prod me to study and sound out the words on my own so that I would become familiar with the rules of grammar.…

Ironically, though I wasn’t immediately taken with reading, I became an avid reader after those first few difficult years. I was a regular at my elementary school’s small library, and I competed in everything book-related that I could. Battle of the books, spelling bees, and English classes were my favorite pastimes in grade school. Other children dreaded completing summer reading and literature studies, but I looked at reading…

When you get older you don’t remember a lot of things from your childhood. Even the most important events from your childhood like when your first tooth fell out or when you learned to ride a bike. I don't know why we sometimes can’t remember these key events in our lives but I do remember one thing: When I first learned to read. I enjoy reading because it’s something that takes my mind off everything going on around me, at home and in school. I’ll admit, I don’t read as much as I used to a few years ago, but I still find time to find a book to indulge in from time to time. One of the main reasons I don’t read as much as I used to is for the fact that I just have found more excitement in working on animations, drawing, games... But nevermind that, this paper isn’t about my hobbies. I mostly find horror and fantasy books interesting over all the other options I could pick from.…

I have been a voracious reader for as long as I can remember, and coming into adolescence, books have become my sanctuary. Every moment of doubt or despair was made bearable by a book. I lived in a world created by my imagination, and each time reality disappointed me, books were there to catch me before I lost hope. On introspection, I realize that my love for books comes from a desire to find a relateable situation and character. It was a desire to be understood and empathised with that made me turn to books.…

Reading is our greatest Teacher Dr. Seuss once said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you 'll go.” In my life reading has allowed me to escape the world around me and learn and understand not only myself but also the world and the purpose of life as a whole. By the time I was in 6th grade I had many books, but I also wanted to fit in. One day I thought it would be a good idea to sell all my books so I could go shopping for new cloths to conform.…
