Throughout my time in this course I have learned that children who come from low-SES families are more likely to not want to be involved in school, and have an I do not care attitude. I have also learned that children in poverty also have it harder when it comes to education. It seems both in class and in the article it states the facts that children that live below the poverty lines needs extra help and attention to get them to do well. They seem to need more encouragement and have more goals then children who live above the poverty line. The thing that is most different between this article and what I have learned in class talks about the families’ of these children. In my class, we have discussed how parents felt when they are below the poverty line and the different attitudes that they have. This led to the discussion of how the parent’s behavior affected the students. In the article it does not discuss how the parent’s affect the students. However, from what I learned in class discussions and lessons is that parents do in fact affect their students. If the parent’s do not care, have a bad attitude, and do not care about their child’s learning and schooling, then the children will learn to feel the same.
